Summary The amount of solubilizate depends on the ratio between the number of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic part and the number of glycol groups in the hydrophilic part, the type of substance to be solubilized, the solubilization temperature, and the surfactant concentration. With increasing temperatures, the solubilized amount of substance increases according to a law formally corresponding to theClausius-Clapeyron's equation. The solution enthalpy of the azo dye Sudan Red G in aqueous solutions of dodecyl polyglycol ethers is positive and increases with the decrease in the number of oxethyl groups in the hydrophilic part. It is to be noted that the amount of solubilized substance further increases with temperature in conformity with the law event after passing through the cloud point of the surfactant. There is no difference to be found between the behaviour of solutions in micelles and the phase rich in surfactant which separates above the cloud point. Depending on of the number of oxethyl groups in the hydrophilic molecular part, the amount of solubilized substance passes through a minimum at a given temperature. The reason for this behaviour is the change in the mechanism of solubilization caused by the increase in the number of oxethyl groups in the molecule. Results indicate that with surfactants having a relatively large number of CH2CH2O groups, an additional solubilization may occur under defined conditions not only within the micelle but also in the outer hydrophilic region of the micelle. Unlike ionogenic surfactants, with which the beginning of solubilization fairly coincides with the critical concentration of micelle formation, solubilization starts with nonionic surfactants much later than would correspond to the concentration of micelle formation according to measurements of surface tension. The reason for this behaviour is that adsorption takes place on the substance added for solubilization, causing a loss in surfactant which permits a formation of micelles only at higher surfactant concentrations. The surfactant adsorption on Sudan Red G takes place according to theFreundlich's law. The higher the number of oxethyl groups, the lower the adsorption and, accordingly, the influence on the beginning of solubilization. As a consequence of adsorption, a reduction in surface activity of solutions occurs below the critical concentration of micelle formation when the dye Sudan Red G is added. Surface tension rises by increasing dye concentration.
