    Notes: Langmuir probe measurements of electron density and temperature are made in the plume of a dc arcjet reactor. A dc arc is struck in an argon or argon/hydrogen mixture at 6 atm pressure and expands through a converging/diverging nozzle into the reactor with a pressure of 25 Torr. Methane and methane/nitric oxide are added in the diverging nozzle, and diamond film grows on a substrate in the gas plume. Electron temperatures of 1–2 eV are significantly hotter than the neutral gas temperature in the plume. Electron densities range from 1010 to 1013 cm−3, well above the Saha equilibrium for the gas temperature and pressure and well below the equilibrium for the electron temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments and analytical methods for determining electron-ion recombination and attachment coefficients in highly collisional, cylindrically symmetric plasmas are presented. Photoionization by sparkboard light sources of tetrakisdimethylaminoethylene (TMAE) seeded in atmospheric-pressure helium is used to produce the plasma. The electron density is probed by microwave transmission techniques. The effective recombination coefficient for electrons recombining with TMAE ions in atmospheric pressure helium is found to be (9.0±1.1)×10−6 cm3 s−1 for Te=300 K.

    Notes: Properties of reduced density channels created by energy deposition from electron beams propagating in air are presented. A multi-beam laser deflection technique used to diagnose the channels is described, as are representative examples of density channels formed in multi-pulse propagation experiments performed at the Advanced Test Accelerator at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

    Notes: Comparisons between experimentally measured time-dependent electron energy distribution functions and optical emission intensities are reported for low-frequency (100 and 400 kHz) radio-frequency driven discharges in argon. The electron energy distribution functions were measured with a time-resolved Langmuir probe system. Time-resolved optical emissions of argon resonance lines at 687.1 and 750.4 nm were determined by photon-counting methods. Known ground-state and metastable-state excitation cross sections were used along with the measured electron energy distribution functions to calculate the time dependence of the optical emission intensity. It was found that a calculation using only the ground-state cross sections gave the best agreement with the time dependence of the measured optical emission. Time-dependent electron density, electron temperature, and plasma potential measurements are also reported.

    Notes: Strong microwave absorption was observed when a 10 GHz source illuminated an underdense collisional plasma that had a density gradient scale length several wavelengths long. Significant reductions in angular scattering and cross-polarized components were also observed. These experiments confirm that absorption was the dominant process. The plasma was created by the photoionization of tetrakisdimethylaminoethylene molecules seeded into atmospheric pressure helium. Sparkboard arrays provided the intense vacuum ultraviolet ionizing radiation. Plasma density profiles were measured using transverse scans of 9.7 GHz probe microwaves and were found to approximate an Epstein profile. The absorption at 10 GHz by this plasma was as large as 28 dB in direct backscattering and 15–20 dB when orthogonally polarized microwaves were launched and detected. The peak absorption scales with sparkboard energy in a way that suggests that electron-ion recombination is the dominant electron-loss mechanism at high plasma densities.

    Notes: Plasma-deposited thin films of polycrystalline diamond were achieved with an arcjet plasma. The jet operated with hydrogen gas with small admixtures of CH4. The diamond films were highly nonuniform, probably due to the very high gradients of the chemical species and temperatures within the arcjet-substrate system. The arcjet apparatus, and optical emission spectra and Langmuir probe diagnostics of the plasma are described. Also presented are results for the surface chemical analysis of the diamond film using surface analysis by laser ionization.

    Notes: A chemical vapor deposited diamond film was grown on a silicon substrate by the plasma arcjet method. The deposited film was circular and appeared to be radially zoned under visual examination. A secondary electron microscope was used to examine the surface morphology and microfocus Raman spectroscopy was used to examine the radial compositional variation of the film. Raman spectroscopy shows that the composition of the diamond film changed markedly in the space of hundreds of microns. Changes in the Raman spectra can be correlated with variations in morphology of the diamond film.

    Notes: We describe some observations of plasma formation in aqueous electrolyte solutions (containing either sodium chloride or barium chloride), using a small planar electrode configuration driven by a repetitive bipolar voltage source. Plasma pulses of a few microseconds duration were established by a 100 kHz square wave of a few hundred volts peak to peak, drawing a current during the plasma period of several hundred milliamperes. Spectral measurements show the presence of strong ion lines, confirming that plasma is formed in the liquid. The process produces chemical radicals such as OH and, when placed in proximity to biological tissue, causes biological material volumetric removal, opening possibilities for new kinds of plasma-driven electrosurgery such as tissue debulking or cutting. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on mass spectroscopic measurements of species originating near the stagnation point of an arcjet plasma impinging on a tantalum surface. The plasma is produced in a 1-kW arc through which flows a gas mixture of ∼1% methane in hydrogen. This plasma is near thermal equilibrium, except that a few species such as C2 are slow to equilibrate internally due to the large exothermicity of the reactions that form them. A polycrystalline diamond film grows on the substrate as the measurements are taken. A small gas sampling hole in the deposition substrate samples molecules as they diffuse to the surface. Two stages of differential pumping are used to form a molecular beam which is detected by a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Significant conversion of methane to acetylene (C2H2) and ethylene (C2H4) is observed, as are radicals such as CH3 and C 2H5. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
