Notizen: The surface photochemistry of submonolayer to multilayer amounts of CF3I, adsorbed on Ag(111) at 95 K, has been studied using 248 and 193 nm pulsed laser excitation. For low doses, there is some thermally activated dissociation, limited to 30% of the first monolayer, to form adsorbed CF3 and I. The remaining CF3I adsorbs molecularly. Neither CF3 nor I is photoactive, but adsorbed CF3I is photodissociated, by C–I bond cleavage, at both 248 and 193 nm. A fraction of the resulting CF3 and I desorbs during photolysis; the remainder is retained as chemisorbed CF3 and I. The former processes were probed using time-of-flight and Fourier transform mass spectrometry. The retained products were detected by post-irradiation temperature programmed desorption and Auger electron spectroscopy. The photochemistry varied with wavelength and coverage. Regarding the mechanism, for both 193 and 248 nm, there is good evidence that both submonolayer and multilayer CF3I molecules absorb photons and dissociate into CF3 and I, i.e., direct photodissociation. There is evidence, based on time-of-flight distributions of CF3 photofragments, that I(2p1/2), electronically excited I, is produced at both wavelengths, while ground state atomic iodine is produced only at 248 nm. At both 193 and 248 nm, and for coverages up to three monolayers, there is also evidence for a charge transfer process involving hot electrons produced by photon absorption in Ag(111), i.e., substrate mediated photodissociation. These hot carriers attach to CF3I, and the resulting anion dissociates into CF3 and I−. The latter is detected by Fourier transform mass spectrometry and the former as a low-velocity component in time-of-flight mass spectrometry. At 193, but not 248 nm, there is evidence for a second, substrate independent, charge transfer process also leading to CF3 and I−. For coverages exceeding ten monolayers, approximately 80% of the reaction was through this channel, the remaining 20% occurring through the direct photodissociation channel. To account for this second charge transfer channel, photoinduced intermolecular charge transfer is proposed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary. The complications and outcome of 125 pregnancies in women with sickle cell disease between 1975 and 1981 are reviewed. There were no maternal deaths, but a perinatal mortality rate of 48 per 1000. The main maternal complications were sickling crises (38%), anaemia (65%), infections (61%) and severe pregnancy-induced hypertensive disease (5%). There were three patients with eclampsia. There was a 13% spontaneous preterm delivery rate, 25% of the babies were‘light-for-dates', fetal distress in labour was seen in 24% and 15% were delivered by caesarean section. There was an increased incidence of involuntary infertility and spontaneous abortion. The treatment by prophylactic blood transfusions is discussed.

Notizen: Summary. The complications and outcome of 334 pregnancies in women with sickle cell trait beween 1975 and 1981 are reviewed. The perinatal mortality rate was 6 per 1000. The main maternal complications were recurrent urinary tract infections (6%) and haematuria (16.5%). Fetal distress in labour was seen in 17% and 11.5% were delivered by emergency caesarean section. Compared with a comparable group of women without sickle cell trait, the mean birthweight of the babies (3202 g) was not reduced. The mean age of the mothers (25 years), their mean parity (1.46) and the percentage who were para 4 or more (13%) were all significantly increased, with important implications for the continuing transmission of the sickle cell gene.

Notizen: A new method of thermal programmed desorption (TPD) using time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS) is developed for simultaneous detection, in wide mass ranges, of large molecules and their surface reaction products. It provides a three-dimensional (3D) TPD spectrum that contains a complete set of conventional two-dimensional (2D) TPD spectra of all the masses in the mass range of interest. As an example, we present a 3D TPD spectrum of (methylcyclopentadienyl)Ir(1,5-cyclooctadiene), molecular weight 379.53 AMU, on a rhodium surface. The 3D TPD spectrum comprises TOF mass spectra, from 1 to 385 AMU, accumulating 10 000 scans every 0.6 s. By covering the whole mass range of interest in one TPD experiment, the new TOFMS-TPD eliminates guesswork required in TPD using quadrupole mass spectrometry that limits the number of masses to follow. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Low-energy ion bombardment, concurrent with growth, can control and improve many aspects of film growth, but confirming the atomistic mechanism responsible for these effects has been difficult. We present a simple picture of ion beam-assisted deposition as the interaction of growth-induced and ion-induced surface defects (adatoms and vacancies). We use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that low-energy ion bombardment in conjunction with growth produces a smoother surface morphology than either growth or ion bombardment alone by destabilizing surface clusters and promoting step flow growth. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
