Notizen:
Summary In an attempt to investigate the possibilities of clinical scanning of the nervous system-primarily in the peripheral nerves-the uptake of theoretically suitable labelled substances (tetanus toxoid, amino acids, glucose and dehydroascorbic acid) in nerves, spinal cord and brain was measured in rabbits and mice, and compared with that in blood, muscle etc. The amino acids were taken up in higher concentration in the peripheral nerves following intramuscular than intravenous injection. An increased uptake in the nerve innervating the injected muscle suggests the existence of an axonal flow from the muscle in a proximal direction along the nerve. The concentration of the tracers tested in peripheral nerves was inadequate for clinical scanning. On the other hand, the concentration of glucose in the brain may permit the scanning of normal brain tissue, which should make possible a new and theoretically “different” method of brain scanning.
