    Notizen: We present design and construction details for a novel high field, small bore permanent hexapole magnet. The design is intended for focusing atomic beams of 3He at thermal energies. The magnet uses an optimized polepiece design which includes vacuum gaps to enable its use with high intensity atomic and molecular beams. The 0.3 m long, 1 mm internal radius magnet achieves a polepiece tip field of 1.1 T using NdFeB permanent magnets and Permendur 49 polepieces. The polepiece shanks are designed to saturate so that the hexapole properties are determined predominantly by the shape of the polepiece tip. The performance of the hexapole assembly is demonstrated with an 8 meV 3He beam in the beam source of the Cambridge spin echo spectrometer and the measured focused beam results show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions and negligible beam attenuation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A new anti-oestrogen, tamoxifen, has been synthesized and is available for clinical trials. Its value in the treatment of anovulatory infertility has been assessed in 32 patients. A total of 26 patients apparently ovulated, 16 patients conceived during a treatment cycle, and 2 patients became pregnant during the first spontaneous cycle thereafter. There was no increase in the abortion rate and there were no multiple pregnancies. Side-effects were uncommon and none were serious.

    Notizen: Synopsis. Facieplatycauda pratti gen. n., sp. n. and Myxobolus kozloffi sp. n., from the Klamath Lake sucker,Catostomus luxatus (Cope), are described. The new genus is placed in the family Myxobolidae between Henneguya and Myxobolus. The spore valves beyond the sporoplasmic space are broad and long but not attenuated as an inverted triangle as in certain species of Myxobolus with tails, or of Henneguya with sometimes bifurcated tails. An organism resembling Myxobolus insidiosus (Wyatt & Pratt) was found in the muscle of the body of Salmo clarki (Richardson). Differences in spore structure and site of infection suggest this is a subspecies of the previous form which should be designated Myxobolus insidiosus clarki. A previously unreported species of Myxobolus from Cottus aleuticus (Gilbert) is also described.

    Notizen: We report the results obtained with a standard system of gonadotrophin therapy. Seventy-seven consecutive patients were given 322 treatment cycles. Thirty-seven patients (48 per cent) conceived, six of them on two occasions, making 43 preg-nancies of which 31.6 per cent were multiple. Five per cent of all treatment cycles were complicated by mild, and 0.62 per cent by severe hyperstimulation. The factors involved in achieving a satisfactory pregnancy rate whilst avoiding complications are discussed. Most complications occurred during the first cycle in which the rise in oestrogen excretion suggested follicular development and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) was given (the “first effective” treatment cycle). In such cycles the risk of hyperstimulation rose sharply when the day 6 urinary total oestrogen level was above 150 μg. per 24 hours and the multiple pregnancy rate was increased by a large dose of HCG.

    Notizen: Many fabricated Schottky diodes exhibit significant deviations from the theoretically calculated current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of ideal Schottky diodes. Attempts have been made to account for this deviation using interface states or surface state densities. Previous models have used the interfacial layer model to analyze the nonideal I–V characteristics of a GaAs Schottky barrier. We show here how nonideal behavior can be explained by considering surface leakage currents and material resistance. The standard figure of merit of Schottky diodes is the ideality factor, which can be obtained from measurements of δV/δ ln(I). By taking into account device resistance and shunt leakage paths with physically appropriate parameters, a relationship between δV/δ ln(I) and voltage can be established, which yields a better understanding of transport across the interface(s) of real Schottky diodes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
