Notizen: Summary An anaerobic downflow fixed film (DSFF) reactor was used to treat cheese whey. The reactor was initially operated flooded (DSFF mode) and then the liquid level reduced by 67% (ATF mode); thus, the packing support was completely submerged and one third submerged respectively. The partly submerged anaerobic culture had higher gas production, and was more resistant to general and localized high VFA levels; methanogenic bacteria were acclimated to VFA levels as high as 3000 mg/l of propionate and 1600 mg/l of acetate (pH near neutrality) whilst the reactor remained stable.

Notizen: Summary Experiments were carried out during the start up of an anaerobic bioreactor fed with synthetic medium based on glucose. Results showed different substrate fermentative pathways, mainly alcoholic fermentation and anaerobic oxidation. External ethanol additions produced a decrease in the levels of propionic acid. This method for stabilization of anaerobic reactors was more efficient than others reported in the literature.

Notizen: Summary Butyric acid conversion by a mixed methanogenic population in a pilot scale anaerobic downflow fixed-film reactor (DFFR), treating a cheese factory effluent was increased by the addition of nickel (30 mg/l NiCl2. 6H2O). The butyric acid concentration dropped abruptly (2300 to 150 mg/l) when the reactor was fed with Ni (II). Furthermore, when running two lab. scale DFFRs butyric acid utilization and methane production were slightly higher within the reactor supplemented with nickel than in the control reactor (without nickel).

Notizen: A two-column pilot scale downflow percolating fixed film (DPFF) anaerobic reactor treating deproteinized cheese whey (DPW) was used in this study. The system was operated at one-third of the maximum working volume in an attempt to avoid mass transfer limitations of the gas products (since two-thirds of the immobilized microbial culture was unsubmerged), as well as to minimize the effects of localized high volatile fatty acids (VFA) levels and low pH on its methanogenic activity. A new method to shorten the start-up period was used by growing methanogenic and acetogenic (H2-producers) bacteria on a synthetic medium until reaching a stable methane production rate and then switching the reactor over to DPW and allowing acidogenic growth. The start-up period was reduced to 35 days as a result of this operational mode. The reactor was able to handle 8 kg COD/ m3·d after 35 days of operation.

Notizen: Development of a novel two-layer anaerobic biofilm model is based on substrate utilization kinetics and mass transport. The model is applied to steady-state conditions for a fixed-film anaerobic reactor. The microbial film is considered to consist of two distinct biofilm layers, one adjacent to the second, with an acidogenic bacteria biofilm forming the outer layer and a methanogenic film the inner one. The model assumes that sugars are only metabolized by the first layer and converted into volatile fatty acids (VFA), while fatty acids are taken up only by the inner layer. The model is able to predict both substrate flux net uptake and methane production for steady-state conditions. The results of modeling agree with methane production experimental data published elsewhere. Further, the model shows why layered fixed-film reactors can withstand high and inhibitory concentrations of volatile fatty acids as well as severe overloading without failure.
