Notes: We report structure, resistivity, and Meissner effect measurements on YBa2−xSrxCu3O7−δ for 0〈x〈2.0. We find a region of solid solubility extending at least to x=1.0 and a monotonic depression of Tc with x. Using arguments based on structural changes with Sr doping, we speculate that the depression of Tc is due to the local distortion of the lattice in the neighborhood of the Sr site and the introduction of additional oxygen vacancies.

Notes: Summary Research and postnatal service developments have begun to draw attention to the frequency with which mothers encounter difficulties in the management of infant crying. Such difficulties may have unfavourable long–term consequences for the mother–infant relationship. This study investigated the effect of providing first–time mothers with information and advice specific to cry management, during the in–stay period. A sample of 70 mothers was recruited antenatally and subjects allocated to an intervention or non–intervention group. All mothers were asked to complete a range of measures at 2 days postpartum and again 1 month after birth. A post–intervention comparison of groups indicated interesting evidence of a selective intervention effect. Results indicated that certain mothers in the nonintervention group were significantly more likely than intervention group mothers to experience higher levels of negative emotional arousal in response to crying. They were also more likely to adopt a passive response strategy to infant crying and to report generally higher levels of present state anxiety. The significance of the findings is discussed.

Notes: Aims  To identify in-patient emergency admissions to acute hospitals of residents from a health board region in the Republic of Ireland with an acute alcohol intoxication diagnosis; to profile the admissions and to assess whether the increase in alcohol consumption in Ireland has been mirrored by an increase in alcohol related emergency admissions over the same time period.Design  A retrospective review of hospital admissions using Hospital In-Patient Enquiry (HIPE) data and alcohol consumption trends using data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).Setting  Acute hospitals in the Republic of Ireland.Participants  All residents from a health board region admitted with a recorded alcohol intoxication emergency admission to non-private acute hospitals in Ireland.Measurements  All in-patient emergency admissions for which an acute alcohol intoxication diagnosis (ICD Codes 303.0 and 305.0) was recorded of residents from one health board region were extracted from the HIPE system for years 1997–2001 inclusive. Pearson's χ2 test was used to compare proportions in groups of categorical data and χ2 test for trend was used to identify linear trends. Age standardized rates were calculated for each year and trend analysis carried out. Demographic data on the patients were also extracted from the database.Findings  There were 3289 acute alcohol intoxication admissions to acute hospitals of residents from the study region recorded for years 1997–2001 inclusive. There were 777 acute alcohol intoxication admissions in 2001 compared to 432 admissions in 1997, an increase of 80%. Age standardized rates showed a significant increasing linear trend (P 〈 0.001). Over half the admissions occurred on weekends. The average length of stay was 2.7 days (95% CI 2.5–2.8) with just under a quarter (24.3%) of these admissions being discharged on the same day. The majority of these patients were male (71.5%), 40.9% were under 30 years old and over half (59.4%) were single. Conclusions  This study shows that alcohol intoxication accounted for a substantial number of emergency in-patient admissions to acute hospitals in one health board region in Ireland and that the age standardized recorded acute alcohol related emergency admission rate increased significantly over the 5-year period, 1997–2001. This increase mirrored the national increase in alcohol consumption over the same time period.

Notes: 1. The effects on the coronary and systemic haemodynamics of intravenous and intracoronary injections of two benzfuran derivatives, amiodarone and its brominated analogue (L8040), were studied in open-chest anaesthetized dogs. The effects of L8040 on cardiac intracellular potentials after 6 weeks of 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal injections in rabbits were also investigated.2. Both compounds produced dose-related and quantitatively similar decreases in coronary vascular resistance following their intracoronary administration; threshold effects occurred with about 0.25 mg of each drug and maximal effects with 4 mg. Larger intracoronary doses produced measurable systemic effects.3. Intravenous injections of amiodarone and L8040 (2·5·10 mg/kg) produced dose-related decreases in heart rate and aortic pressure with a fall in total peripheral resistance. The left ventricular output was either unaffected or increased with a consistent augmentation in stroke volume.4. The bradycardia produced by both drugs was associated with prolongation of the P–R interval of the electrocardiogram with no significant effect on the QRS duration or the Q–T interval.5. Each drug produced a decrease in the total peripheral vascular resistance with no change in left ventricular end diastolic pressure except after 10 mg/kg doses which led to an increase in this parameter.6. Cardiac contractile force and peak LV dp/dt were reduced by both drugs in a dose-related manner.7. Chronic intraperitoneal administration of L8040 in rabbits caused a prolongation of the duration of the atrial and ventricular intracellular potential without an effect on the maximal rate of depolarization.8. The effects of amiodarone or L8040 on the coronary circulation and arterial pressure may be attributed to their vasodilator properties but their depressant actions on cardiac contractile force and peak LV dp/dt with an increase in left ventricular end diastolic pressure at high doses, also suggest intrinsic negative inotropic propensity for both compounds.9. It is concluded that the overall effects on coronary and systemic haemodynamics of amiodarone and its brominated analogue are likely to permit a favourable influence on the balance of oxygen supply and demand in myocardial ischaemia; in addition, their actions on sinoatrial and atrio-ventricular conduction as well as those on cardiac repolarization suggest potential antiarrhythmic properties which merit investigation.
