Notes: Attempts to explain the higher wages associated with unionization as efficiency effects from formalized ‘voice’ institutions have failed to explain why competent managers cannot institute efficient communication and participation without the many constraints imposed by union rules and formal collective bargains. Both American evidence and a simultaneous model estimated with data from the German metal industries are more consistent with our ‘managerial pressure’ theory, in which unionization responds to harder work to obtain compensating differentials. The powerful voice of German works councils does not enhance productivity or wages in our sample.

Notes: The effects of individual economic incentives are modified by social interactions among cooperating members of an organization such as the firm. An economic theory of such interaction, based on individual rationality or utility maximization, is briefly outlined, and various hypotheses on the effects of profit-sharing, piece-rates, and employee participation in decision-making are derived. These hypotheses are tested on data collected from smaller West German firms with various participation and profit-sharing schemes, independent of legal co-determination requirements. The predicted positive effect of participation, and of profit-sharing combined with participation on productivity is confirmed, in contrast to received theory.

Notes: Two new methods are described for the quantitative measurement of itch: the principle is to measure scratch which is the major objective correlate of itch. The first method is to record whole body movement at night by a vibration transducer on a bed leg; this gives qualitative and quantitative information. The second method is to measure limb movement with movement -sensitive meters; this gives only quantitative data but is quicker and more easily carried out. The subjective sensation of itch was found to correlate well with nocturnal scratch, confirming the basic assumption of the method. Itching as measured by scratch occurs throughout the night and increased severity of itch is accompanied by an increase in the number of bouts of itch and not in their duration. Nocturnal restlessness is associated with an increase in leg movement and so can be dissociated from itch-provoked scratch, which is mostly done by the hands. The response of pruritus to treatment was demonstrated by both methods.
