Notes: Abstract The male Bengalese finch,Lonchura striata, has two types of song behaviour (directed song, DS and undirected song, US). DS and US share a basically identical syllable repertoire, sequence pattern and tempo, but differ in the time course of appearance during the maturational process. In order to examine whether this results from a difference in testosterone (T) dependency, we studied developmental changes in the fecal T level and the amounts of DS and US during the 2–4 month period (N=7). DS appeared between 83 and 94 days of age, 4–16 days after a rise in the fecal T level. In contrast, US appeared earlier and at high frequency even when T was still at a very low level. These results suggest that DS is more dependent on the T level than US, and is not activated until the T level rises during the maturational process.

Notes: Abstract We investigated clinicopathologically the pyramidal signs, including spasticity, hyperreflexia, and Babinski’s sign, and the involvement of the pyramidal tract and primary motor cortex, in seven Japanese autopsy cases of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Pyramidal signs were observed in six (86%) of the seven autopsy cases. Hyperreflexia and Babinski’s sign were each evident in five patients, but spasticity was observed in only one patient. Loss of Betz cells and presence of glial cytoplasmic inclusions in the primary motor cortex were noticed in all seven cases. Astrocytosis in the fifth layer of the primary motor cortex was noticed in five cases, but its presence was not related to the duration of the disease. Involvement of the pyramidal tract in the spinal cord, particularly of the small myelinated fibers, was observed in all seven cases, but no involvement of the pyramidal tract in the midbrain was evident in any of the six cases in which this structure was examined. In MSA, pyramidal signs were shown to be present more frequently than believed before, and the clinicopathological correlation between pyramidal signs and involvement of the pyramidal tract was obvious. Constant involvement of Betz cells in MSA has not been reported. Our clinicopathological findings may also make a contribution to the understanding of the clinicopathological hallmarks of MSA.

Notes: Summary In a case of cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), confirmed biochemically and histologically, quantitative histological studies of the biopsied sural nerve revealed significantly higher incidence of de- and remyelination and onion bulb than in controls. The density of total myelinated fibers fell within the range of controls, although the density of large myelinated fibers seemed to be slightly decreased. It was suggested that the preferential involvement of the myelin sheath and Schwann cell may exist in CTX.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Unilateral renal artery constriction was performed in 14 rabbits during the warm season and in 11 rabbits during the cold season. The rise of blood pressure after the renal artery constriction was greater in the latter than in the former group.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Plasma renin activity was measured in the acute stage of experimental renal hypertension in the rabbit. Plasma renin activity increased in half of the animals after unilateral constriction of renal artery, while it remained normal in almost all animals after bilateral constriction of renal arteries or after constriction of the abdominal aorta. There was no correlation between blood pressure and plasma renin activity.

Notes: Abstract Karyotypes of the brackish-water polychaeteNeanthes japonica (Izuka) collected from five rivers in Japan from 1984 to 1988 were examined with air-drying and flame-drying methods using materials consisting of regenerating tails, clumps of spermatogonia and youngN. japonica specimens (embryos, larvae or juveniles). A diploid number of 28 was determined in well-spread metaphase chromosomes of mitotic cells. The presence of an XX-XY (male heterogametic) sex chromosome system was established for the first time in polychaetes. The Y chromosome was larger than the X chromosome. Slight differences in karyotype were found between two forms (the small- and large-egg forms), which are very similar in adult morphology but can be distinguished by reproductive and developmental characteristics.

Notes: Abstract A transketolase mutant was first isolated from Corynebacterium glutamicum, an organism of industrial importance. The mutant strain exhibited an absolute requirement for shikimic acid or the aromatic amino acids and vitamins for growth, and also failed to grow on ribose or gluconic acid as sole carbon source, even with the aromatic supplement. All of these defective properties were fully restored in spontaneous revertants, indicating the existence of a single transketolase in C. glutamicum that was indispensable both for aromatic biosynthesis and for utilization of these carbohydrates in vivo. The transketolase mutant accumulated ribulose extracellularly when cultivated in glucose medium with shikimic acid, but no ribose was detected.

Notes: Summary The fiber projection from the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) to the cerebellum was examined in the cat. Electrolytic lesions were placed in a confined area of the LRN using a parapharyngeal approach, and the ensuing degeneration was studied in sections stained by the Nauta and the Fink-Heimer methods. Fibers from the LRN ascend the ipsilateral restiform body, terminating bilaterally but chiefly in the ipsilateral cerebellum. In the ipsilateral cortex projections were found to lobules I to V, with denser terminations in sublobules IVb to Ve. The projections are stronger in the intermediate-lateral zones than in the vermis proper. There is also a dense projection to sublobules VId and VIf and to the medialmost part of the simple lobule (HVI). Scanty termination was seen in the medialmost part of crus I. There is a moderate projection to the caudalmost folium of sublobule VIIb and to the rostral folia of sublobule VIIIa and the paramedian lobule. The contralateral projection by fibers crossed within the cerebellum is far less dense but clearcut in the anterior lobe, the rostral folia of lobule VI and the medial part of the simple lobule. In the ipsilateral nuclei strong projections were found to rostral portions of the medial nucleus (M) and the caudal two thirds of the anterior interpositus nucleus (IA) with predominance in the lateral part of the latter. A focal projection was found to rostrodorsal portions of the posterior interpositus nucleus (IP). No projection was found to the lateral nucleus (L). Contralaterally there is a weak projection to the rostral part of M and the medial parts of IA and IP.
