    Notizen: Through kinship and other links to destinations, many African American interstate migrants in the United States join other people in destination households. These “linked” migrants contrast to “independent migrants” who move as individuals or intact groups and set up their own households at the destination. Using U.S. Census Public Use Micro Sample data, this paper first shows that, in the 1985-90 period, about 45 percent of all Black interstate migrants were independent, compared to 38 percent who were linked to housing at the destination and 17 percent who moved into group quarters. Second, a multinomial logit model, incorporating individual and state-level variables, is specified that contrasts the determinants of independent and linked migration. Tests show that independent migration can be modeled with classic migration determinants, including individual educational and occupational resources, labor market conditions at the destination, and public goods at the destination including the level of welfare payments. Linked migration, on the other hand, is much less responsive to these factors, and not at all responsive to destination unemployment and welfare levels. Separate tests of male and female models suggest a great contrast between independent and linked migration for females. It is concluded that the understanding of Black migration must take into account a variety of factors beyond traditional labor market conditions, including links to the destination and individual housing circumstances.

    Notizen: We report annealing time effects on the microstructural evolution and resultant magneto-transport property changes in Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/PtMn/Ta spin valves comprising PtMn layer thicknesses ranging from 10 to 30 nm. Postdeposition annealing was performed at 270 °C up to 35 h. The blocking temperatures of samples with 20 nm PtMn and 30 nm PtMn layers were found to be 350 °C and 400 °C, respectively. The magnetoresistance and interlayer coupling field changes became large as annealing time increased, in particular, for samples with relatively thicker PtMn layers. The main cause of microstructural changes and property degradation was due to interlayer diffusion of atomic constituents such as Mn, most likely through grain boundaries. Light B doping (1 at. %) in both free and pinned CoFe layers was proven effective in terms of blocking diffusion processes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Resonant laser light and electrical pulses are used to induce time-dependent optogalvanic signals from commercial hollow-cathode lamps. Previous workers observed such signals induced by a laser and interpreted them in terms of specific molecular processes. It is argued that electrical resonance in the lamp and its associated circuit, when combined with the negative resistance characteristic in the lamp, create a circuit which is capable of oscillation. This circuit, under certain conditions, has been found to oscillate spontaneously or it may be stimulated to yield damped oscillations through the action of an electrical pulse, or by a resonant-laser pulse. Such effects must be considered in the interpretation of time-dependent optogalvanic data in addition to specific molecular processes which may be taking place.

    Notizen: The magnetic properties and Hall effects of Pd/Co multilayer films fabricated by thermal evaporation have been studied using the Hall hysteresis loop measurement. The polarity of the Hall hysteresis loops of Pd/Co multilayer changed between 4 and 5 monolayers (ML) of Pd. It was speculated that the reason for this phenomena is the change of the position of Fermi level of 3d band in Pd/1Co multilayer from lower half of the band to upper half of the band depending on the Pd thickness. The Hall resistivities as a function of Pd thickness were found to oscillate and the period of oscillation was about 5 ML of Pd. The change of saturation magnetization as a function of Pd thickness reflected the oscillatory behavior up to 7 ML of Pd and the enhanced Co moments were observed in the film with 4 or thicker ML of Pd.

    Notizen: The structural, magnetic, and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) behaviors of new types of composite multilayers were investigated. The main objective of this study was to accomplish high MR sensitivity while maintaining magnetic softness. The MR sensitivity of CoFe/Ag/NiFe/Ag multilayers was higher compared to CoFe/Ag multilayers mainly due to the switching field difference between NiFe and CoFe. The x-ray diffraction analysis and temperature dependence of Δρ provided evidence of the structural evolution in the CoFe/Ag/NiFe/Ag upon annealing. The temperature dependence of Δρ in CoFe/Ag/NiFe/Ag multilayers annealed for 1 min compared with as-deposited multilayers were reduced because the interface structure was sharpened and structural defects were reduced. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The magnetic properties and microstructural evolution of Zr-doped FePt alloy films prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering were investigated. Compared to an undoped Fe59Pt41 binary film, Zr-doped FePt alloy films showed accelerated ordering transformation kinetics accompanying smaller grains: we were able to fabricate a Zr-doped FePt film [e.g., (Fe59Pt41)97Zr3] possessing very fine grain size (5 nm in average) and high coercivity (7.3 kOe) within 10 min annealing at 500 °C. It is thought that the point defects and lattice strain introduced by Zr-doping activated the nucleation rate of the ordered phase. In particular, for Zr-doped FePt films containing less than 45 at. % Pt, the ordered L10 phase was decomposed into a disordered phase after excessive annealing due to the formation of a Pt–Zr compound, most likely Pt3Zr, that reduces the effective Pt content in the ordered phase. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: When root temperature dropped below 25°C, there was a sharp drop in the root pressure (Pr) and hydraulic conductivity of excised roots (Lpr) of young cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings as measured with the root pressure probe. A detailed analysis of root hydraulics provided evidence for a larger reduction in the osmotic component of Lpr (77%) in comparison with the hydrostatic component (34%) in response to the exposure of the root system to 13°C. The activity of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase (EC 3.6.1.35) was reduced from 30 to 16 µmol Pi mg−1 protein h−1 upon exposure to 8°C for 1 day. Ultrastructural observations showed no evidence of loosening of the microstructure of endodermal cell walls in low temperature (LT)-treated roots. It is concluded that the rapid drop in the Pr in response to LT is largely caused by a reduction in the activity of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase rather than by loosening of the endodermal wall which would cause substantial solute losses. On the other hand, water permeability of root cell membrane at LT was related to changes in the activity (open/closed state) of water channels.
