Notes: An automatic stirred tank reactor of laboratory scale has been developed for on-line measurement of conversion, viscosity, and molar mass distribution of homogeneous polymerizations. For these on-line measurements, a fraction of the reaction mixture is bypassed through a densimeter and a viscometer. Samples are taken at intervals of 15 min, diluted semi-automatically, and then injected into a high performance gel permeation chromatograph for determination of the molar mass distribution of the polymers. A microcomputer collects the measured data, calculates the monomer conversion and the output data for different control units. In this study, methyl methacrylate is polymerized batch- and semi-batchwise with ethyl acetate as solvent and in the presence of different initiators. The semi-batch polymerizations are carried out at constant reaction rate by feeding the initiator and at a given increase in viscosity by feeding the solvent.

Notes: The free-radical precipitation polymerization of acrylic acid in toluene was studied in an isothermal reaction calorimeter. The polymerization shows an autocatalytic behaviour of the rate of polymerization typical for precipitation polymerizations. The rate of polymerization with respect to conversion can be modeled by taking the volume fraction of the precipitated polymer into consideration. The viscosity of the reaction mixture increases with increasing volume fraction of precipitated polymer. The viscosity runs through a maximum at high conversion. The final viscosity decrease is probably due to shear stress caused aggregation phenomena of the polymer particles. A model is discussed which can describe the increase and decrease of viscosity of the system.By means of reaction calorimetry it is possible to determine the reaction-sided heat transfer coefficient during polymerization. The comparison of the experimentally determined temperature course of the reaction mixture and the temperature course calculated with a coupled model of the polymerization and the calorimeter shows that the heat-transfer characteristic changes instantaneously during a small conversion interval at the very beginning of the polymerization.

Description / Table of Contents: The kinetics of the polymerization of acrylamide in dispersion consisting of a water-in-isoparaffin emulsion were examined in the presence of sorbitane monooleate as emulsifier. Oil-soluble as well as water-soluble azocompounds were used as initiators. For the range of experimental values investigated the following rate expressions were determined for maximum reaction rates.rmax = k cI cM cE-0.2 for oil-soluble initiators with k = f (temperature and interface area) rmax = k' cI0.5 cM for water-soluble initiators with k' = f (temperature)With comparable reaction conditions, using oil-soluble initiators polymers with remarkably higher molecular weights were produced. Based on the kinetic results for the system with oil-soluble initiators in paraffins a reaction model is suggested considering the polymerization taking place in the dispersed water droplets and considering the mass transfer of primary radicals from the oil phase into the water phase as the rate determining step of the reaction. Micellar structures could not be detected in paraffins. Contrary to polymerizations in reaction systems with aromatic organic phases, the reaction in the present system should not be called an inverse emulsion polymerization.

Description / Table of Contents: The kinetics of the polycondensation of sodium sulfide hydrate and 1,4-dichlorobenzene to poly(thio-1,4-phenylene) in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as solvent was studied in a differential scanning calorimeter at temperatures between 220 and 280°C.This polycondensation shows an autocatalytic behavior and the kinetics can be modelled by a first order reaction up to complete conversion. This is explained by the low solubility of sodium sulfide in l-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The concentration of sodium sulfide is regarded as being constant during the whole course of the reaction. The autocatalytic effect can be explained by the increase of the condensation rate constant at the beginning of polycondensation due to the higher reactivity of the oligomers compared to the monomers. The number- and the weight-average molecular weight of the products formed during the course of the polycondensation can be modelled by means of stochastic methods. A simple model with only two different rate constants of the condensation process is assumed. The concentration of sodium sulfide in the reactive phase is found to be 2-5% of the value of dichlorobenzene at the beginning of the reaction and remains constant nearly until the end of polycondensation.

Description / Table of Contents: The reaction of poly(acrylic acid) dispersions with diglycidyl ether or dicarboxylic dichlorides as crosslinking agents leads to the formation of macrogels without shrinking of the original dispersions. The particles of the dispersion are stabilized by block copolymers and are about 100 nm in diameter. Micrographs of scanning electron microscopy of the freeze-dried gel show a three-dimensional network structure formed by the particles. The kinetics of the crosslinking reaction was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. A model is presented considering a partition equilibrium of the crosslinking agent between the disperse and the continuous phase and the influence of mass transport of the crosslinking molecules in the interior of the particle. By means of dynamic rheology it was shown that the macrogels obtained are the result of chemical crosslinking reactions between the particles. Frequency-dependent measurements of the dynamic modulus during the crosslinking reaction showed that the network formation is a reaction-controlled cluster-cluster aggregation process. Dynamic light scattering experiments indicate a dominating cluster fraction with sizes of about 1 to 2 l m just before the gel point. The evolution of clusters is described by a simple model based on a stochastic method. Catalytically active materials can be prepared by anchoring metal colloids within the polymer particle network.

Notes: The batch polymerization of butadiene in hexane with an in-situ-activated Ziegler-Catalyst containing neodymium versatate, ethylaluminium sesquichloride and triisobutylaluminium was studied at 45°C. The rate of polymerization was determined by online density measurements. A mathematical model has been developed which is able to describe the kinetics of polymerization at different catalyst ratios. At molar ratios of aluminium/neodymium above 40 a bimodal molar mass distribution can be observed by gel permeation chromatography which leads to the assumption of more than one active species being present in the polymerization system.

Description / Table of Contents: A surfactant system containing polystyrene-block-poly(oxyethylene) and water was used for the free radical precipitation polymerization of acrylic acid in toluene. The use of this stabilizing system makes it possible to produce poly(acrylic acid) dispersions with a particle diameter ranging from 50 to 300 nm and solid contents up to 40 wt.-%, which remain stable for months. The rate of polymerization, which was measured on-line in a reaction calorimeter shows a strong autocatalytic behavior. The maximum of the polymerization rate and the corresponding time of appearance depend strongly on the water content. The influence of the composition of the surfactant (block length), its concentration and the concentration of initiator and monomer on the polymerization rate and the particle diameter were studied. Especially by varying the block length of the copolymer, the number of particles, respectively the particle diameter, can be controlled. To describe the course of the polymerization process, a model based on the theory of homogeneous particle nucleation is suggested. The influence of water on the swelling equilibrium of the poly(acrylic acid) particles is taken into account.

Description / Table of Contents: The stabilized free-radical precipitation polymerization of the cationic monomer N-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylbenzylammonium chloride (MADAMBQ) in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride was studied by reaction calorimetry. Poly(ethylene oxide) was used as stabilizer. The rate of polymerization reaches its maximum immediately after initiation and remains nearly constant up to 50 % conversion followed by a decrease that could be described by a first order kinetics. The particles formed are approximately 1 to 30 μm in diameter and are stable over a period of several months.A model based on the theory of homogeneous particle nucleation is suggested to describe the kinetic course of polymerization, taking into account the rate of polymerization in both phases. With the assumption that the concentration of monomer in the phases is determined by a Nernst distribution law, the kinetics of the early stage of polymerization can be modelled reasonably well. The solution polymerization and the unstabilized precipitation polymerization of MADAMBQ was also studied.
