Notes: The Gordon, Cox & O'Hare (1984) method has been used for deriving ‘small-circle’ arcs for a series of independently determined apparent polar-wander paths. the ‘small-circle’ approach is considered physically sensible, but unfortunately still requires excessive subjective ‘assistance’ to select the most plausible Euler poles and Euler colatitudes, particularly when there is little relative motion between the continent and the pole. None the less, polar-wander paths can be divided into prolonged ‘tracks’ separated by brief ‘cusps’. the cusps can be associated with particular tectonic events within the continent or groups of continents. This technique thus has the potential for providing a more geophysically realistic definition of apparent polar-wander paths that can be used to help identify non-Gaussian errors in palaeomagnetic data. In addition, the sharpness of most cusps provides a precise age for the onset or cessation of particular tectonic events. the simultaneous occurrence of such cusps in more than one continent also enables an assessment of the global importance of such events.

Notes: Spectral analyses of several published magnetic anomaly profiles from Candé & Kent (1992a) were undertaken prior to analysing, in the same way, raw magnetic anomaly data from similar parts of the South Atlantic. It was found that similar and distinct medium and short wavelengths were present in both the published and raw data. When these are converted into the time domain using the average rate of spreading for each profile, these periodicities appear similar, possibly identical, to those expected from the long-term eccentricity orbital parameters (Fischer, DeBoer & Premoli Silva 1990). While such correlations are not necessarily causative, they suggest that magnetohydro-dynamical processes near the core-mantle boundary may be affected by gravitational changes due to planetary orbital perturbations.

Notes: [Auszug] Archaeomagnetic dating on the Minoan ash horizons of the Santorini volcano and on fired destruction levels at late Minoan sites on Crete demonstrates that the basal (Plinian) air-fall ash of the first ‘Minoan’ pumice is contemporaneous with the destruction levels on central Crete, while ...

Notes: [Auszug] THIS small book is intended to persuade laymen of the importance of geophysical research to Man's present needs, and also of its intrinsic interest. It ranges over a broad canvas, including the origins of the Solar System, oil, gas and metals, the possible relationship between sunspot activity, ...

Notes: [Auszug] Seafloor anomalies from most of the Indian Ocean8 do not show any large movement of Madagascar during the past 75 m.y., but the absence of significant reversals for the period immediately before the Tertiary sequence prevents unique interpretations for earlier times. Notes: [Auszug] THIS book is aimed at the general intellectual, non-specialist reader and is undoubtedly the best bxDok on continental drift which has yet appeared for this type of market, although its numerous anecdotes and overview makes it interesting reading even for the specialist. Notes: [Auszug] There seems to be a misunderstanding of the fundamental evidence against a northerly derivation of this micro-continent. The argument does not depend on the matching of coastlines, marine incursions and so forth, as such arguments are rarely diagnostic. In this particular case, the presence of ...
