Notes: In the scrape-off layer of the Joint European Torus [P.-H. Rebut, R. J. Bickerton, and B. E. Keen, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1011 (1985)], Langmuir probes were used to measure the correlation of ion saturation current fluctuations parallel to the magnetic-field B. It was possible to realize three different probe tip separations (connection lengths) (parallel)B under almost identical plasma conditions and magnetic configuration. Among these, a probe tip separation of 66 m (parallel)B represents the largest value ever realized for this type of experiment. It was found that the correlation is reduced from ≥80% at 0.75 m probe tip separation (parallel)B in the divertor to (approximate)40% at 23 m, but remains at (approximate)40% even for the 66 m separation. An upper limit for the ratio between the average wave numbers parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field |k¯(parallel)/k¯⊥|〈0.0022 is found, but the results are in good agreement with a parallel wave number k¯(parallel)=0.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary.  To establish the pharmacokinetic profile of activated recombinant coagulation factor VII (rFVIIa; NovoSeven®) in children with haemophilia A, and to compare it with the pharmacokinetic profile in adults with haemophilia A.Twelve children (2–12 years) received one single dose of rFVIIa 90 and 180 μg kg−1 in randomized order separated by a washout period of 48 h to 1 month. Six adults (18–55 years) received a single dose of rFVIIa 90 μg kg−1. The pharmacokinetic analyses were based on a non-compartmental method. In children, the plasma level of FVII increased proportionally with the dose. The total body clearance normalized for body weight was significantly faster in children than in adults (FVII:C, 58 vs. 39 mL kg−1 h−1 and FVIIa, 78 vs. 53 mL kg−1 h−1, P 〈 0.05). A trend towards a larger volume of distribution at steady-state in children than in adults was observed (P 〉 0.05).Dose proportionality was established for plasma concentrations of FVII in children with haemophilia A at the dose levels investigated (90 and 180 μg kg−1 rFVIIa). Following administration of rFVIIa 90 μg kg−1, significantly faster clearance was observed in children compared with adults, suggesting that higher doses of rFVIIa may be needed to achieve the same plasma levels as in adults.

Notes: To determine the correlation between Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and clinical examination of the knee after an acute injury, and to see to what extent MRI affected the planned treatment, we examined 90 consecutive patients in a prospective study, clinically and with an extremity Magnetic Resonance (MR) scanner. The number of meniscal lesions, bone bruises and osteochondral lesions found on MRI was significantly higher than the clinical examinations indicated. Despite this, the treatment was only changed in 6 cases. In no case did MRI prevent a planned arthroscopy. MRI may reveal many clinically silent changes in the knee, also after minor injuries. The significance of these MRI findings must await long-term follow-up.

Notes: Summary The presence of pericapillary fibrin and complement C3c in the ulcers of 19 patients with venous hypertension and 14 patients with ischaemic leg ulcers was investigated using histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. There was deposition of fibrin around the capillaries in the central part of the ischaemic ulcers, and the venous hypertension ulcers, and in the non-ulcerated skin around one of the venous hypertension ulcers and two of the ischaemic leg ulcers. The deposition of fibrin is a secondary phenomenon that occurs in the area of ulcerated skin and dose not play a major causal role in the formation of chronic leg ulcers.

Notes: Ber-EP4 immunoreactivity depends on the germ layer origin and maturity of the squamous epithelium Aim: To map the expression of Ber-EP4 in well-differentiated squamous epithelia, metaplastic squamous epithelia and dysplastic squamous epithelia of different origins. Methods and results: Squamous epithelium of different origin was stained using a standard immunohistochemistry method applied to paraffin sections. We found that normal squamous epithelium of the oral cavity, oesophagus, uterine cervix, vagina, anal canal, and branchial cysts are Ber-Ep4-negative, as are the mature squamous metaplasia of bronchial mucosa, urinary bladder mucosa and uterine cervical mucosa. In contrast, immature squamous metaplasia of bronchial mucosa, or uterine cervical mucosa, and squamous dysplasia of oral mucosa of endodermal origin, or uterine cervical mucosa in most cases expressed Ber-EP4. Conclusion: Squamous epithelia of ectodermal origin never express Ber-EP4, whether normal, hyperplastic, dysplastic or neoplastic. In contrast, squamous epithelium of endodermal origin sometimes contains the target glycoproteins of Ber-EP4 when immature, metaplastic, dysplastic or neoplastic. The results indicate that the differences in expression of Ber-EP4 in squamous epithelium depend primarily on germ layer origin, and on the maturity of the epithelium.

Notes: Abstract  A possible relation between joint replacement and malignancy has previously been suggested in a few cases. In the majority of these cases, the authors found either malignant fibrous histiocytomas or osteosarcomas. We hereby report the first case of a liposarcoma in the vicinity of a joint prosthesis.

Notes: Summary During a cruise in the Weddell-Scotia Confluence area (EPOS Leg 2: November–January 1988/1989) nanophytoplankton composition was determined by employing taxon-specific pigment measurements with HPLC. The biomass of the most important components was estimated by using specific pigment ratios measured in cultures of two cryptomonads and a prasinophyte. Highest cryptophyte biomass was found along the retreating ice-edge; the contribution of cryptophytes to total phytoplankton crop increased with time, reaching monospecific bloom conditions at the end of the cruise. Chlorophyll b-containing organisms and Prymnesiophyceae were present everywhere and dominated in the ice-covered part of the survey area. Cryptophyte-specific pigment measurements were in reasonable agreement with cryptophyte cell numbers. Prasinophyte cell counts, however, did not match with measured chlorophyll b concentrations. The quantitative importance of the nanophytoplankton groups reported here underlines the diversity of the plankton in the Southern Ocean's marginal ice zone system which may have implications for food chain dynamics.

Notes: [Auszug] Seven fully anaesthetized pigs (12-35 kg) were used in the experiments. One pig was exposed in the first experiment, and two pigs in each of the following three experiments. Each pig was exposed to heat energy on the left side of the body and to electrical energy on the right side7. The areas of ...
