Previous magnetic measurements on FeTAC, [(CH3)3NH]FeCl3⋅2H2O, have shown it to behave as a one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet with an exchange constant J/k=17.4 K. A transition to an ordered state was observed near 3.1 K. Whether the transition was to a state of two- (2D) or three-dimensional long-range order could not be determined from the magnetic study. The specific-heat measurements reported here confirm the value of the intrachain exchange constant and show the critical temperature to be 3.135 K. Lattice dimensionality crossover is observed. The data are well described by Onsager's rectangular 2D Ising lattice, with a ratio of exchange constants ||J'/J||=1.3×10−3. The high degree of one-dimensional isolation found for FeTAC makes it an attractive candidate for studies of linear-chain magnetism.
