    Notes: Electrical properties of (p)aSi:H-(n)GaAs heterojunction were investigated by measuring current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics. The experimental results are interpreted in accordance with a generalized a-c junction model. The built-in potential of the heterojunction and the gap-state density in the chemical vapor deposition (p)aSi:H were obtained from the capacitance-voltage characteristics.

    Notes: An analysis of the magnetically induced, compression gas puff has led to a new design which greatly enhances the performance of the Z-pinch, soft x-ray source incorporating this concept. It is shown that the improved gas puff design has resolved the problems related to the nonuniformity of the annular slit opening in the gas puff nozzle and to the poor coupling of the induction coil current with the gas in the nozzle plenum. Suggestions are made to further improve the design in order to reduce nozzle erosion due to arcing from the high-current Z-pinch discharge.

    Notes: We have studied the response of a YBCO/PBCO/YBCO ramp-type junction to coherent radiation at 176 and 270 GHz. The I-V characteristic of the junction closely resembles the prediction of the RSJ model. The IcRn product of the junction is 0.25 mV at 5 K. The millimeter-wave radiation is coupled to the junction via a quasioptical structure that focuses the radiation onto the junction through a yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 substrate. At 176 GHz, we have observed as many as six Shapiro steps at the maximum power level of our Gunn oscillator-pumped frequency doubler. Shapiro steps are still clearly seen up to 65 K. The amplitudes of the zeroth, first, and second Shapiro steps, as functions of the square root of the radiation power, agree remarkably well with a Bessel function fit, indicating the junction is voltage-biased at the radiation frequency (rf). At 270 GHz, due to a combination of the heavy rf loss in the ZrO2 substrate and the lack of radiation power, we have observed only the first Shapiro step.

    Notes: Noise studies of both the dc and ac Josephson effects have been performed on a high-Tc ramp-type Josephson junction irradiated at 176 GHz. Well-established analytical results for noise in overdamped RSJs are used to model the measured I-V characteristics, and their agreement is excellent. Noise-rounded I-V curves at the critical current and the first and second Shapiro steps under coherent 176 GHz radiation have been studied in detail at several temperatures and rf power levels. The noise temperatures inferred from these simulations are close to the physical temperatures. An increase of noise temperatures at high radiation power levels is a result of radiation heating, which could be due to a bolometric effect.

    Notes: A two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic code is developed to study the dynamic performance of a magnetically induced compression (MIC) gas puff. It is shown that the plasma temperature in the gas puff plenum can rise up to 10–12 eV. The maximum calculated sheath velocity is in the 107 cm/sec range. Calculations also show that the pressure in the gas puff plenum can rise by a factor of 570–1360, depending on the initial pressure. The mass flow rate and the injected gas density fall in the proper range for the operation of a Z pinch only when a relatively high initial pressure is used. The simulated ion-induced and light-induced voltages in the ion and light detectors provide means of comparing the numerical results with measurements. The calculated results are found to match reasonably well with the measured values.

    Notes: Recent experimental studies on homogeneous curved shear flow have shown that the imposition of strong mean flow curvature can cause a reversal of the turbulent shear stress, giving it the same sign as the gradient of mean velocity. Measurements of the coherence spectrum for these flows has revealed that this reversal is not uniform across all scales, and that eddies of different sizes can have opposite orientations and transport momentum in opposite directions. To evaluate the influence of linear mechanisms in the shear stress reversal a "rapid distortion'' type of model was applied to those flows which demonstrated this phenomenon. The model predicts that flow curvature causes a periodic modulation of the structure of sheared turbulence, and that the sign of the shear stress reverses because of these oscillations. The period of the modulation, in terms of the total strain, was found to decrease as the turning rate increases relative to the shearing rate. For those flows which showed a reversal of the shear stress, the range of experimental observation was only a fraction of the predicted period, but interpreting the observed development as a portion of an oscillation the measurements were found to be qualitatively similar to the predictions of the linear theory. In cases of stronger turbulence a self-preserving structure developed, before the shear stress could reverse, and the measurements deviated significantly from the predictions.

    Notes: Grain protein compositions of 106 advanced generation backcross lines from crosses involving ‘Amigo’ (1AL.1RS), ‘Aurora’, ‘Kavkaz’, ‘Skorospelka-35’ and ‘Sunbird’ (all 1BL.1RS) and ‘Gabo’ 1DL.1RS parents and 152 cultivars with unknown pedigree were analysed by one-dimensional SDS-PAGE. Eighty seven backcross lines and 16 cultivars carried one or other of these translocations, 2 cultivars had a 1R (1B) substitution, whereas 5 backcross lines were found to be heterogeneous for the 1BL.1RS translocation. The translocation lines were easily identified by the presence of secalins (Sec-1) controlled by rye chromosome arm IRS and a simultaneous loss of the gliadin (Gli-1) and/or triticin (Tri-1) protein bands controlled by the replaced wheat chromosome arm (1AS, 1BS or 1DS). Certain gliadins, showing no allelic variation among the genotypes analysed, were identified as markers for chromosome arms 1AS (Mr= 34 kd) and IBS (Mr= 42,33 kd). The whole chromosome substitutions 1R (1B) were recognized by scoring for the presence of Sec-1 and HMW secalin bands, Sec-3 (controlled by rye chromosome arm 1RL) and the absence of Gli-B1 and HMW glutenin subunits, Glu-B1 (controlled by wheat chromosome arm 1BL). The results have shown that protein electrophoresis provides a rapid and reliable technique for screening genotypes for these translocations and substitutions in a breeding programme.

    Notes: Spin coating of two commercially used polymer solutions is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Physical and rheological characterization of these solutions indicates that under the spinning conditions currently used they behave as nonvolatile, viscoelastic fluids with constant viscosity and elasticity. The corresponding Reynolds (Re) and Deborah (De) numbers are up to order unity. The theoretical analysis demonstrates and explains why, at very short times after the inception of impulsive spinning, the velocity and stress fields in such fluids develop in an oscillatory manner. The amplitude of these oscillations increases with the ratio of the retardation parameter to the Deborah number, whereas their damping rate gets smaller as De increases. Since these oscillations dissipate very rapidly, and before substantial thinning of the film takes place, the thinning rate, velocity, and shear stress components do not deviate eventually from those of a Newtonian fluid. Such a complete explanation of similar experimental findings has not been offered before. The radial normal stress component does increase considerably over its Newtonian value, and this explains certain "experimental practices.'' Similar oscillatory development early on occurs even at higher Re, as long as Re∼De, but it is dissipated again, this time because of the abrupt thinning of the film. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental measurements of "dry film'' thickness and with dynamical measurements of "wet film'' thickness during spinning, which are reported herein for the first time. Care must be taken in reporting "dry film'' thickness because the commercial solutions under study retain part of the solvent after "soft baking'' over a hotplate. Complete solvent removal produces dry films, but requires treatment in a vacuum oven, higher temperatures, and longer heating times.
