Notizen: Light- and electron-microscopic observations of the chemosensory areas of the arteries of the tortoise (Testudo hermanni) reveal that clusters of nonmuscular cells are found in the adventitial layer of restricted regions of the carotid artery, aortic arch, and pulmonary artery. In these clusters, three types of cells are complexly interwoven: the G-cell closely resembles the glomus cell, which has been found in the arterial chemoreceptor area of several animal species; the LG-cell has very large electron-dense granules; the third type is a G- and LG-cell supporting cell. Membrane specializations are often observed at apposing membranes between G-cells. Two kinds of nerve endings synapse with G-cells, one with numerous clear synaptic vesicles, the other without vesicles. Some G-cells are in membrane-to-membrane contact with smooth-muscle cells (g-s connection), and here a membrane thickening is visible. Nerve terminals with numerous synaptic vesicles synapse with the LG-cells. The G-cell in the carotid artery, the aorta, and the pulmonary artery is a chemoreceptor element ultrastructurally the same as the glomus cell in the arterial chemoreceptor area of various vertebrate species.

Notizen: The subduction and exhumation of accretionary prism metasedimentary rocks are accompanied by large-strain ductile deformations which may be recorded in microstructures. Porphyroblast microstructures have been a key to unravel the kinematics in such deformed belts. Shape-preferred orientation (SPO) of epidote and amphibole inclusions that define S-shaped trails in prograde cores of plagioclase porphyroblasts were analysed from the high-P/T Sambagawa metamorphic rocks. Inclusions are found to be elongate parallel to the [010] and [001] directions, respectively, and their long-axis orientations define an internal foliation Si (best-fit great circle) and lineation Li (maximum on the Si). S-shaped inclusion trails in the orthogonal sections do not exhibit the same geometries, but rather are grouped into two types, where the foliation intersection axes (FIAs) are nearly perpendicular and parallel to Li, respectively. These two types of S-shaped inclusion trails are seen in the sections inclined at low and high angles to the Li, respectively. However, the latter type commonly consists of composite trails, where the Si is first rotated about an FIA perpendicular to the Li (i.e. unique axis), and then about an FIA parallel to the Li. The S-shaped inclusion trails are interpreted to have formed by the successive overgrowth of matrix minerals and rotation of the plagioclase porphyroblast cores about a unique axis in non-coaxial deformation. The rotation of Si about an FIA nearly parallel to the Li is perhaps an apparent rotation, caused by the deflection of foliation around the growing prismatic plagioclase grain prior to inclusion into the porphyroblast. This study has for the first time documented the 3-D geometry of S-shaped inclusion trails in porphyroblasts from accretionary prism metasedimentary rocks and identified their origin, which helps to understand the flow kinematics in the deeper part of a subduction channel.

Notizen: Gold neutral-beam probes are used for the space-potential measurements in the barrier and in the central cells of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. The thermal barrier potential depth is directly observed by simultaneous measurements of the on-axis space potentials at both locations. Two-dimensional space potentials in the barrier region are measured by sweeping the probing beams with different beam energies.

Notizen: The relation between the electrostatic potential and the low energy electron density under electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) in the thermal barrier of a tandem mirror is investigated analytically and numerically. The distribution function of mirror trapped electrons at low energy is found to stretch out in the perpendicular direction to the magnetic field and to be well approximated by a bi-Maxwellian (T⊥≥T(parallel)) rather than by a Maxwellian. Under this approximation it is found analytically that the conventionally used Boltzmann formula derived from the full Maxwellian plasma for the barrier depth is modified to another expression including the ratio between T⊥ and Te (central cell electron temperature). The bounce-averaged Fokker–Planck simulations show that T⊥/Te itself is a function of the potential depth and that the conventional formula is modified to q(cursive-phib−cursive-phie)=Te ln(αnc/nb) with α=1.5–1.8 depending on ECRH power. This expression agrees well with experimental results on GAMMA 10 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)].

Notizen: Abstract We report our experience with 4 cases of cystic dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts following hepatic portoenterostomy for biliary atresia. Two of the cases did not achieve satisfactory bile excretion and all four cases developed recurrent cholangitis after hepatic portoenterostomy. The attacks of cholangitis seemed to be associated with the presence of intrahepatic cysts. Although one case resulted in death from hepatic failure, three other cases are now outpatients. Patients who develop recurrent cholangitis following hepatic portoenterostomy, should be examined to exclude the presence of intrahepatic biliary cysts. Ultrasonography, computed tomography and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography were all effective in detecting cysts and provided valuable information for planning treatment. Percutaneous transhepatic or surgical drainage of the bile ducts was effective in reducing jaundice, and recurrent cholangitis.

Notizen: Summary The aim of this study was to establish a stable and reproducible model of pulmonary artery hypertension with concomitant ARDS-like changes of lung function and lung morphology. In eight anesthetized and ventilated dogs, 0.01 ml/kg oleic acid (OA) was given i.v. followed by repetitive injections of 100 µm glass beads (GB) into the right atrium until a mean pulmonary artery pressure of 35–40 mm Hg was reached. Mean right ventricular (RVP) and pulmonary artery (PAP) pressures, pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), lung compliance and resistance, PaO2, intrapulmonary shunt and colloidosmotic pressure (COP) were closely monitored for 150 min. PAP, RVP, and PVR considerably increased subsequent to OA/GB injection, and stabilized at a high level within 70 min, showing only a minimal decrease (PAP, RVP) or no change (PVR) during the following 80 min. A significant decrease of PaO2 and pulmonary compliance as well as an increase of resistance and intrapulmonary shunt were found as early as 30 min after the last embolization and they remained unchanged for 120 min. Reduction of COP suggested transcapillary leakage of macromolecules. Histology revealed an interstitial and intraalveolar edema. We conclude that the combined injection of oleic acid and glass beads provokes microvascular lung injury and results in stable pulmonary artery hypertension with concomitant ARDS-like changes of lung function. Thus, an acute model is provided in the dog allowing for the study of cardiac function in ARDS complicated by pulmonary artery hypertension.
