Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary The curing smoke, generated by the smouldering of alder chips, from a commercial food smoking plant was investigated with respect to polynuclear aromatic compounds (PAC). Samples were taken from inside the ovens and in the working zone immediately outside them. Analysis showed that considerable amounts of methyl phenanthrenes were present in the smoke as a major part of the PAC content.

Notizen: Summary Retention characteristics of series of polymethyl and mono-n-alkyl derivatives of benzene and pyrene, and also of parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), were studied using silica and aminopropyl- and cyanopropyl-modified silica. Differences in the selectivities for the studied compound groups were found between the three phases. Deviations from linear behaviour in plots of log (k′)vs. carbon number were observed for the methyl series. These are explained in terms of differences in π-electron delocalisation within the aromatic ring systems. Further, the effect of methyl substitution on selectivity decreased with an increasing number of aromatic rings. Results were obtained which indicated that the primary adsorption site in a cyano column used in normal phase mode, at least for PAH molecules, is the cyano group.

Notizen: A coupled LC-GC method for the analysis of carbazole-type PANH has been developed and evaluated. Group separation and isolation of carbazoles from interfering acridines in a complex sample matrix was accomplished by using a back-flush technique and an in situ end-capped dimethylaminopropyl silica column in the HPLC part of the system. On-line injection of the carbazole fraction into the GC column was performed with a loop-type interface utilizing concurrent solvent evaporation technique. An LOD of 1-3 pg of individual carbazole compounds was achieved by nitrogen selective detection using an NPD. The method is shown to be robust and is demonstrated by application to personal exposure measurement in an aluminum reduction plant.

Notizen: Peak splitting of high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic compounds originating from the microwave plasma of an atomic emission detector (AED) coupled to a GC has been described and evaluated. The influence of the solute structure, solute concentration, and physical conditions in the AED (such as detector temperature, make-up gas flow, concentration of reagent gases and distance of column end from the plasma) have been studied. An explanation is presented for peak splitting, which is based on an insufficient solute decomposition and solute mass flow in the discharge tube. Modification of the instrument by introduction of additional make-up gas applied through the transfer line has been shown to improve peak shape and solute response.

Notizen: A fully automated system, comprising a liquid chromatograph (LC) coupled on-line to a gas chromatograph (GC) by means of a loop interface, has been constructed for clean-up and analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). An autosampler was utilized for sample injection into the LC. By the use of a back-flush technique in conjunction with an ordinary analytical aminopropylsilica column, PAH could be isolated by LC: a concurrent solvent evaporation injection technique was then used for on-line transfer of the PAH fraction to the GC, where the PAH analysis was completed.Compared with ordinary off-line LC clean-up followed by GC analysis, the sensitivity has been increased by a factor of 50-100, yielding a detection limit for individual PAH of a few nanograms per sample when using flame ionization detection. Further, irreproducible losses of low molecular weight PAH as a result of solvent evaporation steps in off-line clean-up procedures have been eliminated. Reproducibility of retention times and relative peak areas is high, facilitating automatic peak identification and calculation of concentrations, and the system can thus be used for automatic sample evaluation. The total time required for clean-up and analysis is only 1.5 hours, and the demand on personnel time for the analysis of PAH has been drastically reduced. The technique has been demonstrated with samples of urban air and of used automobile engine lubricating oil.

Notizen: Gas chromatography-atomic emission detection (GC-AED) has been evaluated in order to determine the optimal conditions for chlorine and sulfur response of chlorinated biphenyls (CBs) and methylsulfonyl metabolites of CBs (MeSO2-CBs). The influence of the shape of the capillary column end facing the plasma, make-up gas flow, additional transfer line make-up gas flow and reagent gas flows on the detector response has been studied. Using an additional make-up gas flow applied through a transfer line capillary having a decreased outlet diameter yielded an increased detector response with minimum detectable levels for sulfur and chlorine of 1.7 and 20 pg, respectively. Further, a substantial decrease in peak tailing was achieved. The applicability of the method for analysis of biological materials is demonstrated by the determination of the main CB congeners present in human blood and of MeSO2-CBs in seal blubber.
