Notes: Summary In the present note the author has considered the torsional vibration of a cylindrical shell of non-homogeneous material whose rigidity and density vary linearly with distance from the axis of the shell. It is assumed that one end of the shell is fixed while the other end is acted on by a periodic shearing force, both the inner and the outer curved surface being free from stress at all times.

Notes: Summary In the present note the problem of torsional vibration of a bar in which the moment of inertia and the torsional rigidity are proportional to μ0 + μ1s, wheres is the spanwise co-ordinate and μ0 and μ1 are real numbers, has been considered.

Notes: The paper describes a transistorised, portable proton precession magnetometer constructed for surface geophysical prospecting. Constructional and circuit details are furnished. The readout of the instrument is digital. The accuracy of measurement is ± 1 part in 20,000. The maximum gradient of the total field under which a satisfactory measurement can be made is about 1 gamma/cm. The sensing head uses a single coil system with distilled water as the proton sample.

Notes: A physical effect of ultrasound induced lubricity is reported. We studied the dynamic friction dependence on out-of-plane ultrasonic vibration of a sample using friction force microscopy and a scanning probe technique, the ultrasonic force microscope, which can probe the dynamics of the tip–sample elastic contact at a submicrosecond scale. The results show that friction vanishes when the tip–surface contact breaks for part of the out-of-plane vibration cycle. Moreover, the friction force reduces well before such a break, and this reduction does not depend on the normal load. This suggests the presence on the surface of a layer with viscoelastic behavior. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This letter reports a simulation study of depth sensing nanoindentation on a rough surface. The estimated mean hardness and scatter are both influenced by roughness, irrespective of whether there is a genuine variation in mechanical property with deformation volume/depth. The scatter due to roughness always decreases with penetration depth. The roughness dependency of hardness is the product of two terms. The first term is independent of property variation with deformation volume/depth and arises due to the discrete nature of multiple contacts during indentation. The second term is due to property variation with deformation volume/depth, as changing roughness changes the aggregate strength of each contact island. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigate here the axial and transverse mechanical properties of thin (1.5–7 μm) titanium nitride films deposited on high-speed steel by cathodic arc evaporation. The deposited films are rough, the roughness varying with film thickness. Mechanical properties deconvoluted from nanoindentation data show variations with penetration depth and scatter. We explore the effect of film surface roughness on these variations and comment on the possible effects of material heterogeneity and crystal structure on the estimated properties.

Notes: Abstract The optical gap of the amorphous In x Se1−x thin film has been observed to decrease with increasing content of indium in the film (x). An attempt is made to interpret the compositional dependence of the optical gap in amorphous In x Se1−x thin film in an alloy-like approach. It has been found that introduction of higher concentrations of indium imparts greater stability to the structure of the indium selenium alloy. From the study of the radial distribution function (RDF) by X-rays it is observed that there is a correlation between the coordination number and the optical gap of indium selenide thin films.

Notes: Abstract For the first time two cases of an unusual congenital malformation are described. Both patients had an isolated defect at the median raphe covered by colonic mucosa extending from a hypospadiac urethral orifice to the anal orifice. After a thorough review of the embryology, the authors designate this anomaly as exstrophy of the urorectal septum.

Notes: Abstract A rare case of mirror-image dextrocardia with inverse visceroatrial relationship associated with a double symphysis pubis and splitting of the lumbosacral spine and duplication of the bladder and urethra is reported. The clinical findings and investigations are described. An embryological explanation is also suggested.

Notes: Abstract Complications following intramuscular (IM) injections in infants and children are quite frequent. Various studies have revealed that in most of the cases drugs were either injected into the subcutaneous tissue plane or into the muscle, where a disparity between the volume of injected material and the volume of muscle mass where it was injected was obvious. The consequences were either fat-necrotic abscess or muscle fibrosis leading to deformity of the nearby joint. On the basis of our studies and other observations, the ideal technique of IM injection and the best sites for injection in infants and children are suggested in order to prevent complications.
