Notes: Abstract It is known that local refractive index change occurs when femtosecond laser pulses with extremely high peak power are launched into glass. We focused 130-femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm into the bulk of glass and examined the shape of the induced refractive index change. We found that the length of the spot of the refractive index change along the optical axis reached about 30 μm despite the diameter being about 2 μm. To estimate the distribution of induced refractive index change, we fabricated Bragg grating by scanning the focused spot and calculated the amount of the change by applying Kogelnik’s coupled mode theory to the measured diffraction efficiencies of the higher order diffracted beams.

Notes: Abstract The troop of Japanese monkeys at Gagyusan has undergone five fissions between 1955 and 1966. During these 12 years, a concentrated incidence of defections of monkeys belonging to a certain age group has occurred, and a discontinuity in physical strength and age between classes arose. When members in the lower class grow up, the discontinuity in physical strength between members in the lower class and those in the upper class gradually disappears, as a result of which the boundary between the classes becomes indistinct, and the troop falls into an unstable state. In this period, fission often occurs and the number of male deserters increases. After a lapse of a certain period of time, discontinuity in age and physical strength between classes again appears, and the boundary between classes again becomes distinct, bringing about stability in the troop again. Thus, it must be said that fission, along with single desertions of males, plays a very important role as one of the mechanisms for the maintenance of class structure in a troop of Japanese monkeys. Next, the total number of individuals who left the main troop during the five fissions reached 130. This figure is about 1.3 times the number of monkeys who died or left singly, a total of 98 during the 12 years. The size of the Gagyusan main troop never exceeded 180 individuals during the past 12 years. From this it is clear that fission has performed a function in checking the growth of the size of the main troop. With regard to the socionomic sex ratio, fission played a major role in checking the increase in the socionomic sex ratio of the main troop by emitting more males than females. Troop fission is a very effective mechanism for the maintenance of the main troop at Gagyusan.

Notes: Abstract The troop fission of Japanese monkeys has been observed in 11 troops, and the total number of fissions observed numbered 22. Examined cases of fission relative to season, amount of food, troop size and socionomic sex ratio of the main troop and to individuals that acted as nucleus in forming a branch troop and females, exhibited variance, not being uniform. But inquiry into troop fission as seen from the standpoint of the mechanism maintained by Japanese monkeys' society indicated (1) troop fission checks the growth of troop size and increases the socionomic sex ratio of the main troop, (2) troop fission is an effective mechanism for the maintenance of class structure among adult males, and (3) the possibility that troop fission functions to check inbreeding. Thus, it must be said in general that troop fission, along with single desertions of males, plays a very important role as one mechanism for the maintenance of the society of Japanese monkey. However, the branch troop is often composed of a large number of males and a small number of females; in short, it is under very difficult conditions that a branch troop starts on its way to becoming a fully established Japanese monkey troop. The troop fission is an effective mechanism for the maintenance of the main troop, but not too effective for that of the branch troop. It cannot be said that there are abundant data on troop fission of primates other than Japanese monkey. But, from limited data, we can find various forms of troop fission according to each species, and it may be ultimately related to the maintenance mechanism of the primate society.
