Notes: In the Serre mountains of Calabria, Italy, an exposed section of the continental crust, as left by the Hercynian orogeny, consists of intermediate-lower to upper crustal units. Huge masses of granitoids separate the lower from the upper crustal units. Many mica ages have been obtained from metamorphic and plutonic rocks, which have been interpreted as reflecting continuous cooling or discrete Mesozoic events. A reappraisal of previously determined isotopic data integrated with new Rb–Sr biotite ages is presented and assessed at regional scale to better constrain the post-Hercynian geological evolution of the continental crust of the Serre. The ages cover a wide span of time and form clusters which fit a model involving magmatic, hydrothermal and tectonic events preceding and accompanying the opening and closure of the Tethyan ocean.

Notes: Summary Corona textures between olivine and plagioclase or orthopyroxene and plagioclase are present in Hercynian gabbroic rocks from the Calabrian Sila Massif. They have been studied through optical and SEM investigations together with EDS and WDS analyses. Textural features indicate the existence of two extreme corona types formed during late magmatic stages or during subsolidus cooling. Magmatic coronas are characterized by an inner orthopyroxene layer and an outer orange-brown amphibole layer that might be in optical continuity with orthopyroxene and amphibole poikilites respectively. Subsolidus coronas consist of an inner layer of colourless amphibole and an outer layer of amphibole ± spinel. They sometimes form a collar also around plagioclase enclosed in olivine. A large spectrum in the composition of corona amphiboles from Ti-bearing pargasite to Mg-hornblende was observed. The variation in Ti content of amphibole was interpreted as a consequence of the different conditions of crystallization from late magmatic to subsolidus with temperatures ranging from 880°C to 580°C. The significant gahnite component in spinel possibly indicates that subsolidus reactions occurred in an open system. The pressure of formation constrained by the mineral assemblage of metamorphic basement rocks and by the neighbouring diorites has been estimated at 4 kbar.

Notes: Summary The results of microprobe analyses of clinopyroxenes from alkaline melasyenites and layered melagabbros, produced by intra-plate magmatism of Paleocene age at Punta delle Pietre Nere, are here given and discussed. The analysed pyroxenes range from diopsidic to acmite-rich compositions. The first crystallized pyroxenes (diopside) show AlVI contents suggesting shallow depths of crystallization. In addition pyroxenes from melasyenite and those from melagabbro display different Cr contents, Al/Ti and Mg/(Mg+Fe2++Fe3+) ratios confirming their crystallization from melts produced by different parental liquids. Diopsides and salites show an overall trend towards high Al, Ti and Fe3+, suggesting that the crystallization occurred under decreasing SiO2/Al2O3 ratios and under relatively highpH2O−pO2 conditions. Pyroxenes from the Pietre Nere melasyenite show a progressive variation towards acmite rich compositions at Mg/(Mg+Fe2++Fe3+) lower than 0.5; those from the layered melagabbro, instead, show a continuous enrichment in Ca Fe3+ AlSiO6. This different behaviour is due to the co-crystallization, with the latest pyroxenes, of phases with different K/Na and Si/Al ratios.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Olivine, Amphibole und Glimmer aus Melasyeniten und Melgabbros der Punta delle Pietre Nere wurden mit der Elektronenstrahl-Mikrosonde analysiert.
Notes: Summary Olivines, amphiboles and micas from Punta delle Pietre Nere melasyenites and melagabbros have been analysed by electron microprobe. The analytical data integrated with those relative to the previous studied pyroxenes are here considered to draw some petrological inferences. The mineral compositions suggest that (i) the two subvolcanic bodies derived from diverse parental liquids, (ii) the magmas intruded at shallow depth as a mush of liquid plus crystals and (iii) the magmas crystallized under highf O 2 conditions. The mineral compositions reflect that of the liquids from which they crystallized as well as the order of mineral crystallization.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Stadien vulkanischer Aktivität sind im Monte Vulture Komplex zu unterscheiden.
Notes: Summary Two distinct periods of volcanic activity are distinguishable at Monte Vulture volcanic complex: the first activity started with tephritic and foiditic volcanics, documented by xenoliths in the phonotrachytic (Ph-T) ignimbrites, lava blocks in a basal explosion breccia deposit beneath the Ph-T ignimbrites, sandy lenses rich in volcanic components in fluviatile conglomerates, and ended with emplacement of phonotrachytic deposits (Ph-T ignimbrites and lava domes); whereas subsequent activity produced deposits of foiditic and tephritic composition which built up the central volcano. The volcanics of the two periods do not fit a simple evolutionary model on the basis of geochemical signatures. New whole-rock and microprobe analyses of mafic minerals from volcanics of the first period are presented here, together with the published data on M. Vulture volcanics, to give a more comprehensive picture of the magma evolution. Principal features can be summarized as follows: (i) melanitic garnet occurs as a stable phase only in the volcanics of the first period of activity; (ii) olivine and diopside occur only in the cone building deposits; (iii) pyroxenes from the volcanics of the first stage crystallized under different physico-chemical conditions with respect to those occurring in volcanics of the central edifice; (iv) the analyzed lavas occurring as blocks in the explosion breccia deposit of the first stage display diversities with respect to the lavas of the central volcano, and it is likely that diverse parental magmas fed the first and the subsequent activities. During the first stage, crystal/liquid fractionation processes determined the evolution from the mafic parental magmas towards phonotrachytic compositions, as with the foidite-tephrtte sequence of the second stage (cone building deposits). Mineralogical evidence of mixing processes is present in the volcanics of the sequences of the two stages.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Aufschmelzung im Ungleichgewicht dokumentiert an granulitfaziellen Metasedimenten der nördlichen Serre (Kalabrien, Süditalien) Die Sr und Nd Isotopensystematik von Leuko-, Meso- und Melanosomen, einschließlich von 12 Leukosom- und Nebengesteinspaaren, wurde untersucht.
Notes: Summary Leucosomes, mesosomes and melanosomes, including 12 leucosome-host rock pairs have been studied for Sr and Nd isotopic systematics in migmatitic metapelites of the Serre (southern Calabria) which experienced granulite facies conditions in Hercynian times. Most samples came from the deep to middle part of a metapelitic unit, which is 5–6 km thick. The leucosomes presently occurring in the migmatites are mainly K-poor peraluminous leucotonalites; the host rocks (metapelites, metagreywackes and opx-bearing rocks) are more or less depleted in “granitic” component and have molar Al2O3/(CaO + Na2O + K2O) (A/CNK) ratios up to 15; the highest values relate to garnet + sillimanite-rich metapelites. Sm/Nd ratios are generally lower in the leucosomes and Rb/Sr ratios are very low (≪ 1) and lower than in related mesosomes and melanosomes. The isotopic Sr and Nd values vary in a wide range within the various kinds of host-rocks and within the leucosomes. A correlation of Nd- and Sr- isotopic compositions between coexisting leucosomes and host-rocks has not been found. The isotopic Sr and Nd values of the leucosomes are less variable than the host-rocks; melanosomes having A/CNK ratios 〉 3 concentrate at the lowest εNd290 Ma values, owing to retention of garnet and accessories and depletion of feldspars. The leucosomes define a hyperbolic trend where most samples concentrate in the middle part. These features are interpreted as reflecting melting of several rock types generating melts having a weighted mean composition from the contributing sources. The prevailing leucotonalites and their very low Rb/Sr ratios indicate that plagioclase played a more important role than mica in the melting processes which produced the studied leucosomes. Since assemblages lacking or very poor in biotite and K-feldspar are common in metapelitic restites, potassic melts, as one should expect from melting of micas, must have been extracted before the leucosomes under study formed.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents major and trace element data and mineral compositions for a series of foiditic-tephritic to phonolitic rocks coming from Monte Vulture, Southern Italy, and investigates their origin, evolution and relationship with the other centres of the Roman province. Major and trace element variation in the foiditic to tephritic suite agrees with a hypothesis of evolution by simple crystal/liquid fractionation, whereas the early erupted phonolitic trachytes and phonolites have geochemical characteristics which do not support their derivation from tephritic magma by crystal fractionation. Foiditic and phonolitic rocks have mineral compositions which are interpreted as indicating magma mixing. However geochemical evidence shows that this process did not play an important role during the magma evolution. The Vulture rocks have compositional peculiarities such as high abundance of Na2O, CaO, Cl and S, when compared with other Roman volcanics. Instead, the distribution of incompatible elements is similar to those of Roman rocks, except for a lower content of Rb and K, higher P and lower Th/Ta and Th/Nb ratios which are still close to the values of arc volcanics. The high contents of Na, Ca and of volatile components are tentatively attributed to the interaction of magma with aqueous solutions, rich in calcium sulphate and sodium chloride, related to the Miocene or Triassic evaporites occurring within the sedimentary sequence underlying the volcano. The distribution pattern of the incompatible elements is interpreted as indicative of magma-forming in a subduction modified upper mantle and of the peculiar location of M. Vulture.
