Notes: Far from equilibrium particle and momentum transport in a binary mixture subject to uniform shear flow is analyzed. Particles of each species are labeled by a "color charge.'' Mutual diffusion is created by the action of an external field that accelerates particles of different species along opposite directions. For a dilute gas of Maxwell molecules, the set of two coupled Boltzmann equations is seen to be solvable by the moment method. The color conductivity tensor and the shear viscosity coefficient are obtained as nonlinear functions of the shear rate and the color field. The usual choice of the external color field [Cummings et al., J. Chem. Phys. 94, 2149 (1991)] yields a zero-field limit of the color conductivity tensor different from the self-diffusion tensor. In order to avoid the above discrepancy, a different form of the external field is proposed.

Notes: We propose a model radial distribution function for hard disks that is interpolated between the Percus–Yevick distribution functions for hard rods and hard spheres. The model contains a mixing parameter and two scaling parameters, which are determined by imposing self-consistency with an extension to d=2 of the Carnahan–Starling equation of state. Comparison with computer simulation is carried out.

Notes: Recently, the color diffusion in uniform shear flow has been analyzed from the Boltzmann equation [V. Garzó and A. Santos, J. Chem. Phys. 97, 2039 (1992)]. Here, the analysis is generalized to allow for a shear-rate dependence of the color field, which yields a zero-field limit of the color conductivity tensor identical to the self-diffusion tensor.

Notes: By longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy we analyzed the development of the domain structure in Co70.4Fe4.6Si15B10 amorphous ribbons for which giant magneto-impedance had been observed. Using transverse and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry we measured the magnetization direction around the hysteresis loop. These results allowed us to model the domain structure of the sample during the giant magneto-impedance measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We studied the temperature dependence of the macroscopic ferri–ferromagnetic transition in amorphous Y–Co/Gd–Co bilayers. The samples were produced by sputtering, and characterized by vibrating sample magnetometer and transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect at low temperature. From a model of the unusual shaped domain wall (DW) at the interface of the bilayer, we determined the temperature dependence of the thickness δ and relative position Δ of the DW and, also the exchange constant A. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We developed a model to completely explain the domain wall existing at the interface of an amorphous Y–Co/Gd–Co bilayer. Samples produced by sputtering, were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect. From the experimental parameters we determined the thickness (δ) and relative position (Δ) of the domain wall, and also the exchange constant (A) for the Co–Co atom pair. The room temperature value of A was found to be (4.8±1.4)×10−8 erg/cm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this work we present experimental results on the inhibition of formation of sulfur hexafluoride molecular clusters in a free supersonic expansion, due to resonant absorption of intense radiation from a pulsed CO2 laser. The spatial energy distribution of the molecular beam in the transverse direction was measured with a pyroelectric detector with and without incident radiation. A skimmer placed in the collisional region of the expansion causes a second expansion of the molecular beam which is more divergent when these molecules are vibrationally excited by a CO2 laser beam perpendicularly crossing the molecular beam before the skimmer. This is due to the inhibition of formation of molecular clusters by the CO2 laser beam which leads to a lower average mass for the expanding beam particles. In a molecular beam with isotopic species, a selective inhibition of formation of clusters would lead to different spatial distribution for different isotopes in the molecular beam.

Notes: Nonlinear optical excitation of crystalline quartz with intense femtosecond UV pulses yields the 2.8 eV recombination luminescence of the self-trapped exciton. The relation between the excitation and emission intensities reveals two- and three-photon kinetics for photon energies of 4.4 and 4.0 eV at excitation densities below 1018 cm−3. These power laws are not sizably influenced by transient linear absorption, self-focusing, and filamentation.

Notes: Most adults brush and floss inadequately, and constant education and/or reinforcement is often required. Bacteria are usually left behind with mechanical oral health routines, and chemotherapeutic agents may have a key role as adjuncts to daily home-care. To date, two antiseptic mouthwashes have received the ADA Seal of Acceptance: Peridex® (Zila Pharmaceuticals, Phoenix, AZ, USA; CHX, chlorhexidine) and Listerine® (Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, Morris Plains, NJ, USA; essential oil (EO) mouthwash). CHX has a strong affinity for tooth and tissue surfaces, but can cause brown staining on the teeth and tongue. Patients must also wait until all traces of toothpaste are removed before rinsing with CHX. Long-term use of an EO mouthwash is microbiologically safe, with no changes observed in the bacterial composition of supragingival plaque, and no evidence of antimicrobial resistance. A number of trials have demonstrated the long-term plaque- and gingivitis-reducing properties of both CHX and EO mouthwashes. These studies clearly demonstrate that these agents have lasting efficacy, and can access hard-to-reach areas.

Notes: A kinetic model for a dilute multicomponent gas system is proposed. It is constructed by replacing the Boltzmann collision operator with a relaxation-time term, in the same manner as in the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) model for a single gas. The model contains several parameters that are determined by keeping some of the main properties of the Boltzmann description. In contrast to previous works, the BGK equation is recovered when mechanically identical particles are considered. Thus the model can be expected to apply to systems in which masses are comparable. The transport properties to the Navier–Stokes level are studied and Onsager's reciprocal relations are found to hold.
