Notizen: Hydrogenated amorphous silicon has been prepared at a plasma excitation frequency in the very-high-frequency band at 70 MHz with the glow discharge technique at substrate temperatures between 280 and 50 °C. The structural properties have been studied using hydrogen evolution, elastic recoil detection analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The films were further characterized by dark and photoconductivity and by photothermal deflection spectroscopy. With respect to films prepared at the conventional frequency of 13.56 MHz considerable differences concerning the electronic and structural properties are observed as the substrate temperature is decreased from 280 to 50 °C. Down to a substrate temperature of 150 °C the electronic film properties change only a little and the total hydrogen content cH and the degree of microstructure that can be directly correlated to cH increase only moderately. Below 150 °C the electronic properties deteriorate in the usual manner but still the total hydrogen content does not exceed 21 at. % even at a substrate temperature of 50 °C. It is argued that the influence of the higher excitation frequency on the plasma and on the growth kinetics plays a key role in this context by allowing a highly effective dissociation of the process gas with the maximum ion energies remaining at low levels. It is concluded that deposition processes at higher excitation frequencies can have important technological implications by allowing a decrease of the deposition temperature without losses in the material quality.

Notizen: This study investigates the propagation of borehole Stoneley waves across permeable structures. By modelling the structure as a zone intersecting the borehole, a simple 1D theory is formulated to treat the interaction of the Stoneley wave with the structure. This is possible because the Stoneley wave is a guided wave, with no geometric spreading as it propagates along the borehole. The interaction occurs because the zone and the surrounding formation possess different Stoneley wavenumbers. Given appropriate representations of the wavenum-ber, the theory can be applied to treat a variety of structures, including a fluid-filled fracture. Of special interest are the cases of permeable porous zones and fracture zones. The results show that, while Stoneley wave reflections are generated, strong Stoneley wave attenuation is produced across a very permeable zone. This result is particularly important in explaining the observed strong Stoneley wave attenuation at major fractures where it has been difficult to explain the attenuation in terms of the single planar fracture theory. In addition, by using a simple and sufficiently accurate theory to model the effects of the permeable zone, a fast and efficient method is developed to characterize the fluid transport properties of a permeable fracture zone.

Notizen: Abstract  The fabrication of high aspect ratio microstructures using the X-ray lithography and electroplating step of the LIGA process requires, that the metal layer on the substrate (plating base) enables a flawless resist adhesion and provides a high conductivity for the following electroplating process. In addition, a flawless metal adhesion after electroplating has to be ensured. Typically metal layers of titanium, but also of copper and gold are used. In case of higher structures, fluorescence radiation generated in the metal layer during exposure reduces the bond strength between the resist and the adhesion layer [7]. Since the fluorescence probability decreases with a decreasing atomic number, the suitability of conductive carbon as the plating base was investigated and compared to results achieved with titanium. The resist adhesion was increased tremendously on the carbon layer but the metal adhesion is insufficient. Therefore, platinum islands were deposited on the conductive carbon to facilitate good metal adhesion. The resulting resist adhesion was still superior compared to titanium. In addition, metal adhesion was achieved on these layers.

Notizen: During steps 1-7 of spermiogenesis the Golgi apparatus contributes to the formation of the acrosomic system which develops at the surface of the nucleus. Later, in step 8, the Golgi apparatus detaches from the acrosome and remains suspended in the elongated cytoplasm until it degenerates during step 16. Using 3H-fucose as a tracer and the radioautographic technique, we observed that the Golgi apparatus incorporates the tracer and delivers the labeled glycoproteins to the developing acrosomic system during steps 1-7 of spermiogenesis, to multivesicular bodies during steps 1-9, and to the remaining cytoplasm and plasma membrane during steps 1-15. Throughout these steps of spermiogenesis the Golgi apparatus does not show major changes in structure; it is composed of a cortex made up of connected stacks of saccules and a medulla showing a loose aggregate of vesicular profiles. Glycoprotein synthesis in this Golgi apparatus, before and after it contributes lysosomal glycoproteins to the growing acrosomic system, was quantitatively assessed in electron microscope EM radioautographs of tissue sections from animals sacrificed at 1, 4, 8, and 24 h of 3H-fucose injection. The incorporation of the labeled sugar was found to remain quantitatively similar during steps 1-15 of spermiogenesis, and therefore, no shift in glycoprotein synthesis took place following separation of the Golgi apparatus from the acrosomic system. Throughout these steps, fucose molecules are first incorporated in the cortex of the organelle and subsequently transported to the medulla, where they temporarily accumulate before being delivered, depending on the step of spermiogenesis, to the acrosomic system, to the multivesicular bodies, and also, presumably, to the plasma membrane.

Notizen: The reactivity of the various components of the Golgi apparatus of rat spermatids for three phosphatase activities (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphatase, NADPase; thiamine pyrophosphatase, TPPase; cytidine monophosphatase, CMPase) and the incorporation of 3H-fucose by the spermatids was analyzed at the 19 steps of spermiogenesis, i.e., during and after this organelle elaborated the glycoprotein-rich acrosomic system. During steps 1-3, the Golgi apparatus produced, in addition to the proacrosomic granules, multivesicular bodies that became associated with the chromatoid body. NADPase was located within the four or five intermediate saccules of Golgi stacks, and TPPase was found in the last one or two saccules on the trans aspect of the stacks from steps 1 to 17 of spermiogenesis. CMPase was located within the thick saccular GERL elements found in the trans region of the Golgi apparatus from steps 1 to 7 of spermiogenesis, but the CMPase-positive GERL disappeared from the Golgi apparatus after its detachment from the acrosomic system at step 8. The acrosomic system itself was reactive for CMPase and TPPase but was negative for NADPase, while the multivesicular bodies were CMPase and NADPase positive but unreactive for TPPase. Tritiated-fucose was readily incorporated within the Golgi apparatus of steps 1-17 spermatids; in steps 1-7 it was subsequently incorporated within the acrosomic system and multivesicular bodies. These various data indicated (1) that the Golgi apparatus of spermatids, although it loses its CMPase-positive GERL element in step 8, retains evidence of functional capacity until it degenerates in step 17; (2) that in early spermatids the various saccular components of the Golgi are specialized with respect to enzymatic activities; and (3) that each Golgi region may contribute in a coordinated fashion to the formation of the acrosomic system and multivesicular bodies.
