Notes: Abstract. Objective: Expression of CINCs was regulated differentially in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated rat macrophages. We examined whether the expression of CINCs in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated rat macrophages is similarly inhibited by anti-inflammatory drugs.¶Materials and Methods: Rat peritoneal macrophages were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide in the presence of anti-inflammatory steroids (dexamethasone, prednisolone and hydrocortisone) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (indomethacin and piroxicam). The production and mRNA expression of three types of CINCs were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and northern hybridization.¶Results: Anti-inflammatory steroids; dexamethasone, prednisolone and hydrocortisone, dose-dependently inhibited the production of CINC-1, -2 and -3, whose inhibitory patterns were similar to each other. Furthermore mRNA expression of each CINC was inhibited by dexamethasone in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, indomethacin and piroxicam were without effect. Expression of each CINC was regulated differently; the production of CINC-1 reached a maximum at 12 h and then slightly decreased after lipopolysaccharide stimulation, whereas that of CINC-2 and CINC-3 increased up to 24 h. Dexamethasone inhibited the CINCs production and mRNA expression at 9 h after lipopolysaccharide stimulation.¶Conclusions: These results indicate no difference among CINC-1, -2 and -3 in the inhibition of production and mRNA expression of CINCs by anti-inflammatory steroids, although lipopolysaccharide differentially induces expression of each CINC expression in culture of rat macrophages.

Notes: Abstract The lipid composition of tropical marine reef fishes is poorly known, despite their use as food by local human populations and recent interest in health-related benefits of fish lipids. We examined the composition of lipids from epaxial muscle, liver, and two storage sites [mesenteries surrounding the gut (intraperitoneal fat, IPFs) and retroperitoneal fat bodies (FBs) posterior to the peritoneal cavity] in three species of surgeonfishes from Ishigaki Island, Japan: Naso lituratus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758), and A. bariene (Lesson, 1830). Triacylglycerols dominated all samples of neutral lipid and constituted ≥ 99% of FBs and IPFs. Polar lipids generally contained large fractions of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Quantified fatty acids ranged in length from C14 to C24. C16 fatty acids prevailed (〉35% of neutral fatty acids, 〉23% of polar fatty acids), although C18 (〉16 and 〉14%, respectively) and C20 acids (〉8 and 〉19%, respectively) were also common. Saturated fatty acids, dominated by palmitic acid (16:0), comprised 38.7 to 50.7% of acids from neutral lipids and 30.8 to 41.1% from polar lipids. The most common monounsaturated acids were 18:1n9 and 20:1n9. Polyunsaturated acids were prevalent in polar lipids (especially 20:4n6, 20:5n3, 22:2n3, 22:5n3, 22:5n6 and 22:6n3). Common polyunsaturated acids of neutral lipids were 18:2n6, 18:4n3, several n-3 and n-6 C20 acids, 22:2n3 and 22:5n3. IPF and FB were almost identical across species, and lipids of fat bodies (IPFs, FBs) were more similar to those of muscle than those of liver for all three species. The FBs appear to constitute an accessory storage site, which overcomes constraints on lipid storage imposed by a small, inflexible abdominal cavity that contains both viscera and consistently voluminous gut contents. Fatty acid signatures indicate that largely overlooked epiphytic or epilithic diatoms contribute significantly to lipid acquisition. The combination of large quantities of both saturated and n-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in surgeonfishes, in contrast to low saturates and high polyunsaturated acids in lipids of commercially important cool-water fishes, suggests that a study of dietary effects of fish lipids on human inhabitants of the tropics may be instructive insofar as human health and nutrition are concerned.

Notes: Summary The ascending and descending components of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) were investigated by means of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) with a sensitive substrate. The HRP was injected iontophoretically into the MFB at various levels from the anterior commissure to the posterior hypothalamus. In order to prevent the diffusion of HRP to other brain areas, a double micropipette system was used. The descending components of the MFB are derived from (1) the anterior cingulate area, infra- or prelimbic area, and sulcal cortex, (2) the lateral septal nucleus and diagonal band, (3) the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, (4) the paraventricular nucleus (5) the substantia innominata, (6) the amygdaloid complex (AM), (7) the ventromedial (VM) and dorsomedial (DM) hypothalamic nuclei, (8) the entopeduncular nucleus and (9) nucleus periventricularis stellatocellularis. The ascending components of the MFB originate in: (1) the medial preoptic nucleus, (2) the nucleus periventricularis stellatocellularis and rotundocellularis, (3) the posterior hypothalamic nucleus, (4) the parafascicular nucleus, (5) the ventral premammillary nucleus, (6) the substantia grisea periventricularis, (7) the lateral habenular nucleus, (8) the VM and DM, (9) the paratenial nucleus, (10) the AM and (11) the arcuate nucleus.

Notes: Abstract Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy was performed in seven patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP). In two patients there were no cutaneous lesions at the time of endoscopy, but inflammation of the duodenum, especially of the second part, led to suspicion of the disease. Upper GI endoscopy showed abnormalities in six of seven cases, and sigmoidoscopy in one of four cases. The changes were more marked in the second part of the duodenum rather than in the bulb or the stomach. The endoscopic findings included redness, swelling, petechiae or haemorrhage, erosions and ulceration of the mucosa. Histology of the mucosal biopsy specimens revealed non-specific inflammation with positive staining for IgA in the capillaries, but failed to show vasculitis. Upper GI endoscopy, including study of IgA, can be useful in the diagnosis of HSP. Colonoscopy is less helpful, especially if limited to the sigmoid colon.

Notes: Summary A 57-year-old male with primary intracranial malignant melanoma who survived 9 years and 6 months is reported. He underwent surgical removal of the tumour three times during the decade 1978 to 1988, and received chemo-immuno-radiotherapy during that time. Acute tumour growth, suggesting tumour dissemination, was seen in the CT scans after the third removal of recurrent tumour, but then it disappeared after combined chemoradiotherapy with DTIC. He gradually became inactive, probably because of brain atrophy caused by high-dose radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and died of renal failure without any sign of recurrence on CT scans.

Notes: Summary Lateralization of the posterior temporal lobe and inferior parietal lobule in childhood was studied on CT of 276 cases and compared with those in adulthood of 371 cases. CT images were analized based on the morphological features of medullary branches of the cerebral white matter. In children below 5 years of age, the left planum temporale was already more posteriorly located than the right in 56%, while the right was more so in 21%. The asymmetry of the middle temporal gyrus was similar to those of the planum temporale. The folding of the inferior parietal lobule was extensive and intricate on the left side in 63% and on the right side in 8% of children, almost identical to those in the adult. The visualization rates of the intraparietal sulcus were lower compared to those of the adult, but the higher visualization of the left side was a common tendency regardless of age. These alterations in left-right asymmetry seemed to be a morphologic substratum indicating the processes of localization of auditory function to those association areas.

Notes: Seven different alloantisera absorbed with red blood cells (RBC) from appropriate strains of rats detected a series of B cell alloantigenic specificities that could be divided into two groups, presumably coded for by at least two different closely-linked loci in the rat major histocompatibility complex (MHC), RT1. The one locus had two allele codes for a broad specificity and the other locus codes for a unique specificity that was found only in the restricted strains of rats that shared the same mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) phenotype. RBC-absorbed alloantisera were monitored against a panel of B cell fractions obtained from sixteen inbred strains. Two alloantisera, ACI anti-W and W anti-TO detected two broad specificities, into either of which all inbred strains tested were classified. Two broad RT1-B region-associated specificities were thus designated provisionally as Ba-1.1 and -1.2. Another five alloantisera detected four respective specificities which have a narrower strain distribution. Sixteen inbred strains were classified into one of five specificities detected by W anti-F344, F344 anti-SDJ, WKA anti-ACI, W anti-BUF and ACI anti-W absorbed with LEJ lymph node cells. Each specificity was designated provisionally as Ba-2.1, -2.2, -2.4, -2.6, -2.7, respectively. A complete association of Ba-2 specificities with MLR phenotype was observed. Antigenic specificities of Ba-2.1, -2.2 and -2.4 were all classified in a group of Ba-1.1 specificity, whereas Ba-2.6 and -2.7 specificities were associated with Ba-1.2 specificity. This relationship suggested a linkage disequilibrium between the two loci for the Ba antigens.
