    Notes: Summary A new glycoprotein of 31,500 dalton, which has a high affinity for ouabain, and is independent of (Na+−K+)-ATPase, was solubilized from transverse tubule membrane and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum complexes (TTM-JSR) of cat cardiac muscle. This protein could be extracted only in small amounts from sarcolemmaplasma membrane (SLM-PL) fragments, suggesting that it indeed originates from the TTM-JSR.

    Notes: Abstract Carcinoid tumor of the bile duct is extremely rare. Ten cases have been reported in the literature. This report describes the eleventh case. A 55-year-old woman was hospitalized with biliary stenosis. Sonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a tumor in the upper common hepatic duct (CHD). Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography showed extraluminal growth of the tumor. The tumor was resected and histologic examination showed carcinoid tumor of the common hepatic duct.

    Notes: Abstract. Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and intraductal ultrasound (IDUS) in the detection of small pancreatic tumors. Methods: EUS was performed in 166 patients with verified pancreatic disease. IDUS was performed in 46 patients. A microprobe was introduced into the main pancreatic duct through the papilla of Vater using the duodenoscope. Results: EUS was valuable in the detection of small pancreatic tumors. Ductal adenocarcinomas smaller than 1 cm were demonstrated as a hypoechoic mass with a central irregular hyperechoic area. EUS and IDUS were useful in the characterization of intraductal paillary tumors (ductectatic mucinous tumors). EUS demonstrated nodular excrescences, and IDUS depicted papillary proliferation of the duct epithelium, which are characteristic of carcinomas and adenomas but not of hyperplasia. Internal architecture of cystic neoplasms was clearly depicted by EUS, and differentiation of serous and mucinous tumors was readily achieved. A tumor as small as a 5-mm islet cell was demonstrated on EUS because islet cell tumors are very hypoechoic. Conclusion: EUS and IDUS are relatively noninvasive procedures and are useful in the detection of small tumors and differentiation of pancreatic diseases.

    Notes: Summary Horseradish peroxidase was injected into the biceps brachii muscle of rats at various stages of development, from 10 days to 50 weeks. The retrogradely labeled neurons were found in the ipsilateral ventro-lateral column of the cervical cord, C4–C8, of all stages studied, but the number of labeled neurons decreased according to exponential curve as the age advanced. A striking finding was that the contralateral ventral horn cells were also labeled in the 10- and 14-day-old rats.

    Notes: Summary The origin of the spinal cord noradrenaline (NA) has been investigated by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method, combined with monoamine oxidase staining (Glenner) to identify the NA neurons. Following the injection of HRP to the various levels of rat spinal cord, cervical to sacral cord, A1–3, 5–7 NA neuron groups were labeled with HRP. They showed almost the same distribution pattern regardless of difference in the injected segment. Labeled NA neurons in A6 were concentrated in the ventral division of the locus coeruleus, which continued to the labeled NA neurons in the subcoeruleus area. The HRP positive neurons in the pons outnumbered those of the medulla oblongata. As the NA neurons described above were considered to be the source of NA in the forebrain, such as the hypothalamus and preoptic area, the possibility that the same NA neurons might innervate both the forebrain and spinal cord has been presented.

    Notes: Summary Combination of glyoxylic acid perfusion and postfixation in permanganate was used in an electron microscopic study of the locus coeruleus (LC) of the rat to give good preservation of fine structure and a reproducible demonstration of noradrenaline (NA) storage granules. Medium-sized LC cells (18 × 30 μm) contained a moderate number of small granular vesicles (SGV) and a few large granular vesicles (LGV), mainly near the Golgi apparatus. Dendritic branches were identified by their SGV content up to the tip. Dendrites were occasionally in close contact with each other or with the soma of LC cells, forming dendro-dendritic or dendro-somatic contacts. Numerous axon terminals containing many SGV and some LGV were observed in the neuropil, and they tended to contact dendrites and somata of LC cells or dendrites of unknown origin. These neuronal contacts were devoid of synaptic specializations except for an array of dense perpendicular lines between the juxtaposed membranes. Small oval cells (10 × 15 μm) devoid of SGV occurred frequently in the peripheral part of the nucleus, and they were occasionally in direct contact with LC cells.

    Notes: Summary Efferent vestibular and cochlear neurons were identified in the rat's brain stem by retrograde labelling with True Blue (TB) or wheat germ agglutinin — horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) injected into the utricle. Such cells were found at the same locations described in 1983 by White and Warr (ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus (LSO), bilateral latero-ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (LTz) bilateral group E medial and lateral to the genu facialis) and, in addition, bilaterally in the caudal pontine reticular nucleus (CPR) at the level of the descending facial nerve. Cholinergic neurons were identified by counterstaining sections containing TB filled perikarya for (1) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) following pretreatment with diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) or (2) choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), by immunohistochemistry with highly specific monoclonal antibodies. Many, but not all, vestibular efferent cell bodies located in group E were shown to be cholinergic. These and other recently published data suggest that the efferent octavus system may consist of a number of chemically distinct cell groups.

    Notes: Summary Attempts were made to determine the afferent projections to the anterior hypothalamus including the preoptic area from the lower brain stem by means of the horseradish peroxidase method combined with monoamine oxidase staining to identify noradrenaline (NA) neurons. In addition to this technique, a histofluorescence analysis was performed. NA fibers in the medial part of the anterior hypothalamus were mainly supplied by A1 and A2 NA neuron groups, while the lateral part and periventricular zone received NA terminals from both pontine and medulla oblongata NA neuron groups. Furthermore, the present study indicated that there were direct projections to the anterior hypothalamus from non-noradrenergic neurons in the lower brain stem: nuclei raphe dorsalis, centralis superior, cells in the mesencephalic and pontine central gray matter, nuclei parabrachialis lateralis and medialis, cells around fasciculus longitudinalis medialis.

    Notes: Summary The activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the cerebellar lobules of the rat was determined after bilateral destruction of either the superior, middle, or inferior cerebellar peduncles. A significant, 40–60% decrease in ChAT activity occurred in all subdivisions of the cerebellum (anterior lobe, posterior lobe hemisphere, posterior lobe vermis/nodulus and flocculus/paraflocculus) following bilateral inferior peduncle lesions. In contrast, bilateral lesions of the superior or middle peduncles did not result in significant reductions of enzyme activity. These findings indicate that the cholinergic afferents to the cerebellum are contained predominantly in the inferior peduncle, from which they emerge to innervate all of the gross subdivisions of the cerebellum.

    Notes: Summary Flow studies using dynamic CT and xenon (Xe) CT were carried out in 25 patients with ischaemic stroke in the territory of the middle cerebral artery to define the clinical characteristics of cerebral ischaemia at a chronic stage. The parameter of peak height/mean transit time (PH/MTT) obtained from dynamic CT can provide an accurate index for blood circulation in the cerebral vascular bed. Xe CT measurements revealed various kinds of ischaemia around the infarction even in the chronic stages. In mild ischaemia of more than 30ml/100g/min, reduction of cerebral blood flow (CBF) was well correlated to the PH/MTT. However, in severe ischaemia between 20 and 30 ml/100 g/ min, changes of CBF were no longer correlated with the PH/MTT. There were cases showing severe reduction of CBF but which showed sufficient blood circulation (moderate value of PH/MTT). Mild reductions of CBF in parallel with decreased blood supply were often found in the peri-infarct area of infarctions in the centrum semiovale. On the other hand, infarctions in the cortico-subcortical region showed severe ischaemia, in even where blood circulation was relatively well sustained.
