Notes: The phenomenon of electrical degradation in ZnO varistors was studied by application of high-intensity current pulses. A wave shape of 8×20 μs and rectangular waves of 1 and 2 ms were used. The degradation was estimated by reference electric-field variation and by Schottky voltage barrier deformation. The results showed that current pulses reduce both the height and the width of the barrier voltage. It was also observed that the donor density Nd did not change but the surface states density Ns decreased with degradation.

Notes: BaBi2Ta2O9 thin films having a layered structure were fabricated by metalorganic solution deposition technique. The films exhibited good structural, dielectric, and insulating properties. The room temperature resistivity was found to be in the range of 1012–1014 Ω cm up to 4 V corresponding to a field of 200 kV/cm across the capacitor for films annealed in the temperature range of 500–700 °C. The current-voltage (I–V) characteristics as a function of thickness for films annealed at 700 °C for 1 h, indicated bulk limited conduction and the log(I) vs V1/2 characteristics suggested a space-charge-limited conduction mechanism. The capacitance–voltage measurements on films in a metal–insulator–semiconductor configuration indicated good Si/BaBi2Ta2O9 interface characteristics and a SiO2 thickness of ∼5 nm was measured and calculated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444°C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

Notes: We performed a comparative study of electrical and thermal properties of ZnO- and SnO2-based varistor. The electrical properties of commercial ZnO-based varistor are equivalent to that found in SnO2-based varistor system. In spite of this, the SnO2 showed a thermal conductivity higher than commercial samples of ZnO-based varistor, which allied with its simpler microstructure and lower dopant concentration is a remarkable result that point out to the use of this system to compete commercially with ZnO-based varistor devices.

Notes: Abstract The non-ohmic properties of the 98.95% SnO2 + 1.0%,CoO + 0.05%,Nb2O5 (all in mole%) system, as well as the influence of sintering temperature and atmosphere on these properties, were characterized in this study. The maximum non-linear coefficient (α = 32) was obtained for a sintering temperature of 1300°C in an oxygen atmosphere and this maximum is associated with the presence of O in SnO2 grain boundaries, as interface defects. Experimental results also indicate thermionic-type conduction mechanisms, which are associated with the potential barrier of Schottky or Poole–Frenkel types.

Notes: Abstract Ten batches of Arzúa, a soft cow's-milk cheese produced in northwest Spain, were prepared from pasteurized milk. Two (control) batches (CB) were made with a commercial starter containingLactococcus lactis subspecieslactis andcremoris. Another eight batches (MB) were made with the commercial starter plus one of eightMicrococcus spp. strains previously isolated from raw-milk Arzúa cheeses. In all MB, β-casein degradation over the 30-day ripening period was more pronounced (mean 31%) than in the CB (mean 12%). αS1-Casein degradation was highly variable in the MB, though mean degradation over the ripening period (75%) was similar to that observed in the CB (73%). Similarly, volatile fatty acid (VFA) content was highly variable in the MB, with the mean content at 30 days (3.8 mEq per 100 g) being higher than in the CB (1.6 mEq per 100 g). Rheological characterization of the cheeses (by uniaxial compression) revealed significant differences between batches, with some samples fracturing under the compression pressure applied and others not. Sensory evaluation also revealed significant differences. “Non-milk” aromas were more frequently detected in batches made with lipolytic micrococcal strains. Betweenbatch differences in tastes and texture were also detected. Multiple correlation analysis of the data obtained at day 15 of ripening revealed statistically significant positive correlations (r〉0.70) between αS1-casein content and dry matter content, between αS1-casein content and sensorially evaluated firmness, and between VFA content and sensorially evaluated rancidity. Statistically significant negative correlations between sensorially evaluated firmness and the ratio of αS1-I content to αS1-casein content were detected. The results of this study suggest a need for further studies aimed at selecting those strains which could be most suitable for the production of Arzüa cheeses; due to their effects on texture, αS1-caseinolytic strains seem to be more appropriate than β-caseinolytic ones.

Notes: Abstract The microstructural evolution, grain growth and densification for the varistor systems ZnO-Bi2O3 (ZB), ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3 (ZBS), ZnO-Bi2O3-Sb2O3-MnO-Cr2O3-CoO (ZBSCCM) were studied using constant heating rate sintering, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) andin situ phase formation measurement by high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD). The results showed that the densifying process is controlled by the formation and decomposition of the Zn2Bi3Sb3O14 pyrochlore (PY) phase for the ZBS and ZBSCCM systems. The addition of transition metals (ZBSCCM system) alters the formation and decomposition reaction temperatures of the pyrochlore phase and the morphology of the Zn7Sb2O12 spinel phase. Thus, the spinel grains act as inclusions and decrease the ZnO grain growth rate. Spinel grain growth kinetics in the ZBSCCM system showed ann value of 2.6, and SEM and HT-XRD results indicate two grain growth mechanisms based on coalescence and Ostwald ripening.

Notes: Abstract The effect of Cr2O3 on the electrical properties of the multicomponent ZnO varistors was investigated using voltage-current curves and impedance spectroscopy. The structure and morphological modifications were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. It was observed in samples with addition 0.1 mol % Cr2O3 that there was an improvement in the electrical properties of the varistors, but the increase in concentration had a deleterious effect on the potential barrier at the grain boundary. The excess Cr2O3 segregates at the grain-boundary region and increases the donor concentration, leading to a higher leakage current.
