    Notes: FexRh100−x (x=65, 50, 28, and 26) fcc nanocrystalline alloys have been produced using the high-energy ball-milling technique. All the compositions investigated exhibited a maximum in the alternative and zero field cooled susceptibilities in the low temperature regime. The temperature at which this maximum occurs, Tmax, weakly depends on both the frequency and the applied field, and increases with the grain size. These features suggest the appearance of a spin-glass ground state for all the compositions analyzed. The Mössbauer spectra at T〈Tmax shows a broad distribution of hyperfine fields similar to that of an amorphous magnet. Shifted hysteresis loops as well as a considerable irreversibility at high fields indicate that Tmax corresponds to the freezing temperature of the strongly deformed grain boundaries, which behave as spin-glass-like phase. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Bone morphogenetic proteins are members of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily that have multiple functions in the developing nervous system. One of them, bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), promotes the differentiation of cultured striatal neurones, enhancing dendrite growth and calbindin-positive phenotype. Bone morphogenetic proteins have been implicated in cooperative interactions with other neurotrophic factors. Here we examined whether the effects of BMP-2 on cultured striatal neurones are mediated or enhanced by other neurotrophic factors. BMP-2 had a cooperative effect with low doses of brain-derived neurotrophic factor or neurotrophin-3 (but not with other neurotrophic factors such as glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, neurturin or transforming growth factor-β2) on the number of calbindin-positive striatal neurones. Moreover, BMP-2 induced phosphorylated Trk immunoreactivity in cultured striatal neurones, suggesting that neurotrophins are involved in BMP-2 neurotrophic effects. The addition of TrkB-IgG or antibodies against brain-derived neurotrophic factor abolished the effects of BMP-2 on the number and degree of differentiation of calbindin-positive striatal neurones. Indeed, BMP-2 treatment increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein levels in treated cultures media and BDNF immunocytochemistry revealed that this neurotrophin was produced by neuronal cells. Taken together, these results indicate that brain-derived neurotrophic factor mediates the effects of BMP-2 on striatal neurones.

    Notes: The aim is to correlate the magnetoelastic resonance phenomena in Fe-based amorphous wires with physics of bifurcations and chaos. The simultaneous application of a dc axial HZ and ac circular Hφ magnetic fields, with respect to the wire axis, gives rise to the appearance of nonlinear phenomena. The pickup signal, related with the time derivative of axial magnetization, is analyzed through Fourier analysis. For exciting frequencies ω much higher than the characteristic resonance value, it is possible to observe bifurcation behavior characterized by the appearance of signal contributions at a certain values of ω: ω/2, ω/4, ω/8, ω/16, ω/32,... . Such behavior is also checked through the determination of the phase space of the system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A torsional pendulum has been built using a stress relieved FeSiB amorphous wire. Torsional motion is magnetoelastically induced by means of the simultaneous application of longitudinal Hz and circular Hφ magnetic fields. The experimental setup allows one to determine both the torsional deformation and the changes in the longitudinal magnetization Mz of the wire. Free and forced oscillations are observed depending on the parameters of the applied fields. In both forced and free oscillation modes two resonant peaks are observed. Their frequency and amplitude dependences on the axial Hz and circular fields Hφ have been studied. Changes in shear modulus ΔG valued 60% in excess have been measured. To interpret the experimental results a theoretical model is developed taking into account the existence of two different magnetic regions in the wire, core, and shell having a different distribution of axial, radial, and shear stresses. The calculations explain the more remarkable aspects of the observed behavior. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The low-temperature plasma anodization of cosputtered Ta silicide has been studied. The anodization parameters, oxide growth rate, electric field, and faradic efficiency showed a strong dependence on the silicide formation (with or without annealing). Rutherford backscattering techniques were employed to characterize the oxide films and it was found that the plasma oxides grown on as-deposited silicide are of uniform composition in the oxide bulk, but the near-surface region shows a slight Si oxide enrichment, and, thus, a Ta oxide depletion. On the contrary, for annealed (950 °C) silicides, when the hexagonal Si-enriched TaSi2 phase is formed, a high-surface enrichment in Ta oxide is observed in the plasma grown oxides. The insulating properties of the oxide films as determined by capacitance, electrical conductivity, and dielectric strength measurements also depend on the silicide formation, and these properties were correlated to the cation depth distributions in the oxide mixtures. A spectacular difference in the dielectric constant has been found between oxide formed on an as-deposited layer (∼12) and on an annealed one (∼6). This is a consequence of continuous (although nonconstant) cation's mixture in the first case and layered structure in the second.

    Notes: Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a neurotrophic factor with a therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative disorders. GDNF is expressed in the adult striatum, but its signalling tyrosine kinase receptor, c-ret, has not been detected in this structure by in situ hybridization. In the present work, we first examined c-ret and GDNF receptor α1 (GFR-α1) expression using an RNAse protection assay, and found that both receptors are expressed in the adult rat striatum. We then examined whether GDNF was able to regulate the phenotype and/or prevent the degeneration of striatal projection neurons in a well-characterized model of excitotoxic damage. A fibroblast cell line, engineered to overexpress GDNF, was grafted in adult rats striatum 24 h before quinolinic acid (QUIN) injection. QUIN injection alone or in combination with the control cell line induced a loss of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD)-, preprotachykinin A (PPTA)-, prodynorphin (DYN)- and preproenkephalin (PPE)-positive neurons. GDNF selectively prevented: (i) the loss of a subpopulation of striatonigral neurons expressing GAD and PPTA; (ii) the atrophy of PPTA-positive neurons; and (iii) the decrease in GAD, PPTA and DYN mRNA expression, after QUIN injection. Moreover, in unlesioned animals, GDNF increased the size of PPTA-positive neurons and up-regulated their mRNA levels. In contrast, GDNF showed no effect in intact or lesioned striatopallidal PPE-positive neurons. Thus, our findings show that GDNF selectively regulates the phenotype and protects striatonigral neurons from QUIN-induced excitotoxicity, suggesting that GDNF may be used for the treatment of striatonigral degenerative disorders, e.g. Huntington's disease and multiple system atrophy.
