Notes: Abstract The evolutionary dynamics of bimatrix games is studied for rescaled partnership games and zero sum games. The former case leads to gradient systems. The selection equations for sexual and asexual reproduction of genotypes corresponding to mixed strategies are analysed. As examples, the origin of anisogamy and cyclic chases for predator-prey coevolution are studied.

Notes: Abstract We consider two-state automata playing repeatedly the Prisoner's Dilemma (or any other 2 × 2-game). The 16 × 16-payoff matrix is computed for the limiting case of a vanishingly small noise term affecting the interaction. Some results concerning the evolution of populations of automata under the action of selection are obtained. The special role of “win-stay, lose-shift”-strategies is examined.

Notes: [Auszug] Two players engaged in the Prisoner's Dilemma have to choose between cooperation (C) and defection (D). In any given round, the two players receive R points if both cooperate and only P points if both defect; but a defector exploiting a coopera-tor gets T points, while the cooperator receives S ...

Notes: [Auszug] The simple 'prisoner's dilemma' is a game with two players, each having two options, C (to cooperate) and D (to defect). We use Axelrod's payoff values: if both players cooperate, both obtain # = 3 points; if both defect, each receives P = l point; if one player defects and the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The prisoner's dilemma is a classic of game theory in which acting for individual advantage is pitted against acting for collective benefit. An example has been identified among clones of a virus that infects bacteria. A virus is a natural-born cheat that makes its living by exploiting the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Talk of the ‘higher principles of life’ has a ring of vitalism to it. So it must have taken Michael Polanyi considerable pluck to argue in 1968, at the onset of the spectacular advances of biochemistry and molecular genetics, that life has an ‘irreducible structure’. He ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT is the way of fashion to go out of fashion. The new field of complexity seems to experience the same fate as its forerunner, chaos. After a few years of hope and hype, and a remarkable success on the public relations front, it is hitting lean times. A Scientific American suddenly turned ...
