Antipitting properties of oils thickened with polyisobutene

Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Oils Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

It has been established that polymer-thickened oils are better than ordinary mineral oils in antipitting properties over the range of viscosities that were investigated.

  2. 2.

The curve relating antipitting properties to viscosity passes through a maximum both for mineral oils and thickened oils; the maximum is sharper for thickened oils.

  3. 3.

The antipitting properties of thickened oils are affected by the polymer molecular weight, especially at high polymer concentrations. The curves for antipitting properties of thickened oils as a function of molecular weight of the test polymer (P-3, P-8, P-20) pass through a maximum that is characteristic for polyisobutene with 8,000 molecular weight
