Conclusions
The basic features of rheological behavior of melts of mixtures of polypropylene or polyethylene with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) have been established: a decrease (2.5 to 5-fold) in viscosity of the melt of the mixture as compared with the viscosity of the polymers being mixed and an increase in elasticity (swelling) of the mixture melt. These features are connected with fibre formation of both the polyolefin in the PVA matrix and also of PVA in a polyolefin matrix during flow, which does not agree with the Van Oene theory.
The possibility has been demonstrated of processing mixtures containing PVA via a melt, with the objective of preparing ultrathin polyolefin fibres and carrying out the extraction process with water. At polypropylene (or polyethylene) contents in the mixture up to 50% by weight, during the flow process the polyolefin forms an outer fibrous structure which is penetrable by the solvent (water) and is filled with continuous length microfibres. This structure, which is obtained directly during the spinning process, is extremely important for the development of microfibres for cleaning up liquid media, for example.
