Summary
-
1.
By varying the steric hindrance in the phenol it is possible to direct the oxidation reaction either to the o- or to the p-quinoid derivatives.
-
2.
The oxidation of phenols with oxygen in the presence of the complex copper-tertiary amine catalyst is a simple way of synthesizing certain quinoidal and dimeric compounds.
