Summary
The side-effects of pesticides and metal cations are reviewed with regard to input, distribution, persistence and toxicity. The sensitivity of microbial processes is discussed in relation to adaptability and resistance of microbial populations. Procedures for an ecological assessment of toxic side-effects are discussed.
