Feeding effects of peroxidase on survivorship in Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract

Since peroxidase activity in Drosophila tissue homogenates declines with age, it was hypothesized that augmentation of this oxidant defense enzyme would lead to increased survivorship. Fruit flies were fed four different dosages of horseradish peroxidase (HRP): 8, 0.8, 0.08, or 0.008 mg per 10 flies. Flies maintained on 0.8 and 0.08 mg of HRP throughout their life span had a significantly increased survivorship over controls. Flies fed the highest dosage of HRP (8 mg) had a significantly decreased survivorship compared to controls. Declining endogenous peroxidase activity may be a major factor contributing to cellular deterioration and aging in Drosophila melanogaster.
