Abstract
Results of the sudden approximation are compared to predictions of the conventional DWBA and to experiment. The asymptotic spectroscopic amplitude obtained by the sudden approximation is interpreted as the maximum limit of its true value. The main approximations of the model are asserted to stem from violations of the completeness of the virtual neutron wavefunctions and the crude application of the sudden approximation. It appears impossible to separate these two points. Improvements of the model are discussed.

Thanks are due to Dr. L. J. B. Goldfarb and N. Leeming of the University of Manchester for providing us with the BHMM code produced there in collaboration with T. F. Baker. One of us (E. F. H.) is grateful to Prof. H. A. Weidenmüller for the possibility to do a good deal of the work underlying this paper during his stay at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik in Heidelberg (72–73). The help of Dr. W.Ebenhöh and fruitful discussions with the other colleagues are acknowledged. Last not least thanks are due to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and to the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR for their support during my stay at the Leningrad State University.
