Summary
The present study is based on the results of planimetric measurements of temporal bone pneumatization in 60 children. Radiological and clinical follow-up studies show that a myringotomy is sufficient therapy for cases of serous effusions. In contrast, mucous effusions require long-term middle ear ventilation with tympanostomy tubes to get approximately the same increase in temporal bone pneumaticzation.
