Summary
The rhabdom in the ommatidium of the worker honey bee is built up of 9 retinula cells. The eccentric cell = cell No. 9 (approx. 50–75 μ long) is situated in the distal region of the ommatidium beneath the fourth cell (numbered according to Varela and Porter, 1969), which in its turn leaves the rhabdom and runs as an axon towards the basement membrane.
