Summary

Cefadroxil, a new semi-synthetic broad-spectrum cephalosporin, was administered to 144 patients with acute (64.6%) and chronic (35.4%) urinary tract infections. An excellent correlation was found between clinical response (cured+improved=82.6%) and bacteriological eradication of the causative organism (88.9%). The drug was very well tolerated, even after prolonged administration (up to 23 days): side-effects only appeared in 6 cases (=4.2%), two of which were rashes (=1.4%). In one of the participating laboratories, 22 (=35%) of the pre-treatment isolated strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin or derivatives: all of these 22 strains proved to be sensitive towards cefadroxil.
