Résumé
La finalité de la disposition anatomique précise des formations ligamentaires passives et musculaires actives du genou assure la stabilité de cette articulation dans les trois plans de l'espace:

A.
La stabilité sagittale est principalement contrôlée par les ligaments croisés et l'antagonisme extenseursfléchisseurs.

B.
La stabilité transversale est surtout dévolue aux formations médiales et latérales actives et passives (ligaments collatéraux, muscles de la patte d'oie, biceps et fascia lata).

C.
La stabilité horizontale ou rotatoire fait intervenir l'ensemble des éléments passifs et actifs autorisant à concevoir les formations périarticulaires du genou essentiellement comme un système antitorsion.
