Summary
A highly sensitive reagent, 1-phenyl-3-thiobenzoyl thiocarbamide (PTT) is used for the extraction and spectrophotometric determination of iron at trace level. The yellowish-red coloured Fe-PTT complex is formed at room temperature and maximum colour intensity is attained in 60 min. It is extractable into chloroform and shows maximum absorption at 410 nm. Beer's law is followed in the range of 2–20 ng Fe/ml. The sensitivity of determination (Sandell's) is 0.0266 ng/cm2 and molar absorptivity is 2.094×106l·mol−1·cm−1. Many common ions are tolerated to a large ratio. The method has been utilized to determine iron in drugs, water and ores.
