$$p(t) = p(o) \cdot \exp [ - \alpha (T) \cdot t].$$ -
3.
Summary
Fission track fading in apatite-samples from Durango (Mexico) was studied at different annealing temperatures (381, 331, 285, 230, and 208°C) and for annealing times up to 12 months. The following results were obtained:
-
1.
A linear dependence exists between the reduction of track lengthsl and the reduction of track densitiesp independent of annealing conditions (temperature, time).
-
2.
At a given temperatureT track fading proceeds with annealing time according top(t)=p(o)·e−α (T)·t.
-
3.
Plotting the logarithm of the annealing coefficient α(T) versus 1/T (“Arrhenius-plot”) two different slopes were observed. However, only the lower slope is needed for geological applications in the temperature range 0–240°C, and hence only a single value of the activation energy is sufficient for quantitative description of the healing process.
These results are used to correct thermally lowered fission track agest r of apatites from Durango, Pfossental (Austria) and Zillertal (Austria). Furthermore, a new method is given to calculate the temperatureT w of the mineral at the time of the corrected fission track aget w. UsingT w together with other temperature-age-determinations of a region, it is possible to obtain new information about the rate of cooling down. It was also possible to describe the variation of the fission track density with time and temperature, respectively, by a simple differential equation, which has been solved numerically for various geological conditions.
