Summary
The proton spin lattice relaxation timeT 1 of polyethylene has been measured at six Larmor frequencies between 22 and 88 MHz. The temperatureT has been varied from −130°C to +65°C. Insolution crustallized PET 1 was irreproducible below −50°C. This is believed to be due to internal surfaces which are produced on cooling the samples and which give at least the surface molecules more freedom to move.
Inmelt crystallized PET 1 was reproducible.
The numerical values ofT 1 lead us to assume that only molecular motions in the neighbourhood of lattice defects (e. g. kinks) contribute to spin relaxation. The concentration of the defects (kinks) could be assessed. The result (≈1%) agrees with other values.
Since we have measured the frequency dependence ofT 1, we could apply a better method than earlier to determine the activation energy °E of the molecular motions responsible for spin relaxation. The new value of °E (6,7 kcal/Mol) agrees with dynamic-mechanical and dielectric results.
From the frequency dependence ofT 1 we conclude that the spin lattice relaxation in PE is partly limited by spin diffusion from undisturbed lattice sites to lattice defects.
