Effects of ‘calcium ionophore’ X537A on frog skeletal muscle

Abstract

CALCIUM ions are critically involved in the cholinergic neuromuscular transmission process. Presynaptically, Ca2+ is required in transmitter release1 while postsynaptically, it plays a role in acetylcholine-receptor kinetics2. Furthermore, Ca2+ sets off a chain of physicochemical events which leads to muscle contraction3.
