Abstract
THE occurrence of the haemoglobin Hb-J(Tongariki) in new locations in the New Guinea area is of interest because this α-chain variant was the first to be found in Melanesian populations. Furthermore, the high proportion of the variant in heterozygotes and the discovery of three apparently homozygous subjects with Hb-J(Tongariki) as the sole major haemoglobin are relevant to current discussion concerning the possible duplication of the human α-chain gene locus.
