Senescent Changes in the Heart of Drosophila repleta Wollaston

Abstract

HEARTS of 7 day old and 4 month old Drosophila repleta Wollaston were examined with an electron microscope to study age-related changes of the myofibres. Drosophila provides excellent material for the study of senescent changes; for example, it has a short life span, it is easily available in large numbers and its biology is well known. Furthermore, the heart wall is comprised of a single layer of muscle fibres and is free from any blood vessels which might alter with age and produce secondary changes in the myofibres.
