Summary

Using ethyl α-iodopropionate (I) and diethyl malate (II) or ethyl lactate (III) and diethyl maleate (IV) as starting materials, the furanone derivatives VI and VIIb have been prepared. The latter has been converted into a mixture (XVI) of muscarin and its stereoisomers by various methods summarized in the formulae.
