Conclusions

  1. 1.

Prolonged heating at 570°C results in oxide formation at the surface of nitrided steel 15Kh11MF. Iron nitrides are primarily oxidized.

  2. 2.

Nitrides form substitutional solid solution with a wide solubility range. Their lattice has many vacant nodes. Diffusion of oxygen through such solid solutions proceeds easily.

  3. 3.

Grinding of a nitrided surface of this steel to a depth of up to 0.1 mm does not impair the surface hardness but reduces the amount of nitrides in the surface layer and it obviously should increase the resistance to scaling.
