Effects of yttrium and aluminum oxide additions on the sintering behavior and properties of lanthanum hexaboride

  • Published:
Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

A study was made of the effects of yttrium and aluminum oxide additions upon the sintering behavior and properties of lanthanum hexaboride. It was established that yttrium oxide additions of up to 4 wt. % activate the shrinkage process, maximum densification being observed at 2 wt. % Y2O3. The presence of alumina additions deactivates the sintering of lanthanum hexaboride.

  2. 2.

It is shown that yttrium oxide additions increase the electrical resistivity and resistance to ionic bombardment of lanthanum hexaboride and, at 0.5 wt. %, slightly decrease its work function.
