Summary
The well-known spectrophotometric determination of P in steels using the yellow coloured molybdatovanadatophosphate complex after extraction into methylisobutylketone has been modified for better sensitivity (higher sample weight, altered extraction procedure, and mainly absorbance measurement at the wavelength of the peak maximum). The lowest concentration of P in steels which can be determined is thus reduced by one order of magnitude to meet the demand of modern steel production. ICP emission and atomic absorption spectrometry are not able yet to analyze such low concentrations. For the time being, the spectrophotometric method is used to study the stability of calibration lines of emission spectrometry for low contents of P. A high-speed production control data method by means of emission spectrometry must be established in near future.
