Gibbs fand unter Anderem auch, dass aus neutralen Lösungen sowohl Nickel als auch Kobalt durch unterschwefligsaures Natron bei 1200 C. im zugeschmolzenen Glasrohre vollständig als Schwefelmetalle gefällt werden, nur Kobalt etwas schwieriger als Nickel.
