Abstract

We present a quantitative study of coherent detection imaging based on optical heterodyne detection measurement of absorption and scattering in strongly scattering media. Measurement results using a cw laser are compared to those obtained from the temporal scattering profiles of coherent photon migration derived with a low-coherence light source, and they are examined by computation using Mie scattering theory. The influence of diffuse photons on coherent detection is measured as a function of the anisotropy factor and optical thickness of the scattering medium. We show that coherence gating in optical heterodyne detection, which discriminates the diffuse components of transmitted light through their losses of coherence, direction, and polarization of the incident wave, is functionally equivalent to time gating of the early arriving, least scattered photons in incoherent detection using ultrashort laser pulses.
