Summary
Insite into the metabolism of the glandular area of the cervix may be obtained through enzyme histochemical investigations. For this purpose the special enzymes of glucose metabolism, fatty acids oxidation, pentose-phosphate metabolism, citric acid cycle as well as the enzymes of the NADH- and NADPH-diaphorase system and amino acids metabolism were investigated. The uniform methode employed permits a form of screening test whereby information may be obtained about the activities of the different enzymes. With exception to one enzyme of glucose metabolism, the alcohol dehydrogenase, and that of amino acids metabolism, glutamic dehydrogenase, all ferments could be demonstrated. Their function is discussed with especial reference to their importance on the cervix glands. Further enzyme histochemical studies during the different periods of life of the female corresponding to earlier functional morphologic studies are anticipated.
